The Impact of Globalization and Trans-Nationalism on the Hmong
St. Paul, MN –The Center for Hmong Studies at Concordia University, St. Paul is pleased to announce its’ first publication, The Impact of Globalization and Trans-Nationalism on the Hmong. This publication is a compilation of papers presented at the First International Conference on Hmong Studies in 2006 by various Hmong Studies scholars.
The subjects encompass topics such as spiritual rituals, health, leadership development, Hmong Diaspora, and more. Papers selected were from scholars such as Vincent K. Her, PhD, Kathleen A. Culhane-Pera, MD, MA, Mai Moua, PhD, Yang Dao, PhD, and Gary Yia Lee, PhD, as well as seven other.
Here is a sample of Vincent K. Her’s introduction from “Animal Sacrifice and Social Meanings in Hmong American Funerals” on page 3:
Killing a cow and offering it to a deceased father or mother is common in Hmong American funerals across the United States. This important tradition, however, has yet to receive serious attention from scholars of Hmong Studies, and hence, a meaningful account of it is presently lacking. In general, animal sacrifice remains little understood and continues to be frown upon as an ‘exotic’ practice, driven by superstitious beliefs. Even informed scholarly accounts have tended to see it for its ‘spiritual’ mystique rather than its ‘worldly’ rationale.
Publishing The Impact of Globalization and Trans-Nationalism on the Hmong offers researchers and knowledge-hungry individuals the opportunity to learn more about the Hmong in our ever-growing communities in the United States of America, and around the world.
The mission of the Center for Hmong Studies at Concordia University, St. Paul, seeks to honor the past, interpret the present, and enrich the future through research and publication, curriculum development and teaching, and conferences and community engagement.
