Instructor for Introduction to Southeast Asian Literature Course

The University of California, Riverside, invites applications for a instructor as Associate-In or Lecturer position in Comparative Literature/Asian Studies for the Spring Quarter of 2009 (pending funding and final administrative approval).  Candidates must have at least an M.A. degree in Comparative Literature/Asian Studies or the equivalent, significant teaching experience at the college or university level, and a dynamic classroom presence.  Duties will consist of teaching one course in Comparative Literature/Asian Studies (CPLT/AST 62: Introduction to Southeast Asian Literature).  Salary is $5,810.50 per course at the Associate In level and at the lecturer level salary is $4,766.96 per course.  The Spring Quarter begins March 30 and ends June 14, 2009.

The Department of Asian American Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), invites applications for part-time Lecturer positions (Non-Senate) with primary responsibility in teaching interdisciplinary courses in Asian American Studies for the 2009-2010 academic year. International Public Health Project in Vietnam
3 Research Positions in Anthropology

We are seeking expressions of interest for one senior and two early career anthropologists on an 18-month research project within the field of cultural and social anthropology. Ideally, the applicants’ research would be theoretically or thematically relevant to the field of medical anthropology, development or the anthropology of science. The aim of the Research Positions are to expand and develop ongoing research related to lay understandings of dengue fever, its vectors and its control in Australia and Vietnam. The successful applicants will work collaboratively with an international, multi-disciplinary research team and will receive support from senior researchers and community development specialists in Vietnam (Ministry of Health and the Australian Foundation for Peoples of Asia and the Pacific Ltd) and Australia (University of Queensland, James Cook University, and the Queensland Institute of Medical Research).

The positions will involve undertaking long-term ethnographic fieldwork (18 months, April 2009-September 2010) conducting social surveys, analyzing and writing up results and developing and implementing a community engagement strategy. In addition to working closely with local community members, unions, health staff and officials at the field site, the successful applicants would also be expected to liaise with government and other agencies at the regional and national level alongside senior project investigators. Preparation of conference papers, reports and community presentations, supervision of local staff and attendance at project meetings would also be expected. The positions will be based in Hanoi but could be changed to suit alternate arrangements for preferred applicants.

Key Selection Criteria:
Senior Anthropologist
• A PhD or Masters in cultural or social anthropology
• Fluency in Vietnamese and English
• Have undertaken long term, ethnographic fieldwork in Vietnam
• Experience in organizing, conducting and analysing social research using both qualitative and quantitative methods, including survey design
• Experience in writing up both quantitative and qualitative research findings
• An active publishing record (or the capacity to develop one)
• Willing to travel to the field site in Nha Trang

Anthropologist Officers
• At minimum an undergraduate in anthropology
• Fluency in Vietnamese and English
• Have undertaken ethnographic fieldwork in Vietnam

• Research interest in medical anthropology, the anthropology of science, critical public health or international development
• Excellent social and communication skills
• Interest in and experience with interdisciplinary research teams and/or international collaborations
• Experience in using recognised software packages associated with quantitative and qualitative social research (including SPSS for Windows; NVivo or Atlas Ti).

The position will be remunerated based on qualifications and experience. An additional allowance for accommodation, office and travel expenses may also be provided.

Visiting Research Fellowships

Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore is inviting applications for 3-Month Visiting (Senior) Research Fellowships and Visiting (Senior) Research Fellowships under the ARI Sabbatical Leave Scheme for commencement in October 2009, January 2010 and April 2010. The positions are intended for outstanding researchers whose work focus on Asia, with a balance anticipated between senior and junior scholars. Interested applicants should have at least a PhD with a few years of postdoctoral research experience. Applicants are to indicate which of the ARI clusters they like to be affiliated with. Interdisciplinary interests are also encouraged. The position is essentially a writing fellowship, and at least one published outcome is expected.
