Domnern Garden died in Bangkok during the last week of January.  He lived 
over half a century in Thailand, an American graduate of Harvard Law School 
who created a very successful career as a lawyer, and was, to my knowledge, 
the first Westerner to pass the Thai bar exam.  Domnern was fascinated by 
dictionaries, and published a fine Thai-English dictionary which he 
compiled and edited with Sathienpong Wannapok; it has been reprinted 
several times.  Domnern also translated Thai literature, including his 
well-known translation of The Politician and Other Stories, by Khamsing 
Srinawk.  Domnern Garden was an inimitable, irascible, charming and 
brilliant man who will be much missed.  He is survived by his wife and two 
children, in Bangkok.  Susan Kepner
