McCargo, Duncan. Tearing apart the land: Islam and Legitimacy in Southern Thailand. Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 2008.

Impressed by the arguments of John Sidel and Michael Conners, Duncan McCargo’s new book challenges the belief (still widely held among Western counter-terrorism experts) that the escalation of violence in southern Thailand is the natural outgrowth of a broader pan-Asian or even global radical Islamic movement. Quite the contrary,  McCargo argues that the conflict in southern Thailand has its roots primarily, if not solely, in recent Thai history and local socio-economic and political realities.
