Southeast Asian Politics/Comparative Politics

The Department of Political Science at Northern Illinois University invites applications from qualified candidates in Southeast Asian politics for an anticipated faculty opening, beginning August 16, 2009. The rank is open. While there is a strong preference for senior candidates at the associate and full professor ranks who can make an immediate contribution to doctoral teaching and advising, the Department will consider very promising candidates at the tenure track assistant professor level. A Ph.D. in Political Science by the time of appointment is required. We seek a candidate with demonstrated or potential excellence in both scholarship and teaching. Candidates at the associate and senior assistant levels must have completed significant scholarly publications focusing on the region; those at the beginning assistant level must demonstrate the promise of such publications. A record of success in securing external grants is desirable. The Department has a preference for candidates who specialize in Indonesia. However, Southeast Asian politics scholars who focus their work in other areas that complement department and university interests will be given the fullest consideration. The Department would be especially interested in candidates who can contribute course offerings in democratic consolidation, social movements, religion and politics, and informal institutions. An ability to offer a research tools course is desirable. The successful applicant will affiliate with the university’s Center for Southeast Asian Studies, comprising over 25 faculty members.  The Center is a federally funded National Resource Center for Southeast Asia and the recipient of numerous grants. It maintains ties with several Southeast Asian universities and oversees the teaching of five languages of the region. The Department of Political Science has 26 faculty members, three of whom are Southeast Asian politics specialists.

The Department of Political Science offers B.A., B.S., M.A., M.P.A. and Ph.D. degrees. NIU is located approximately 60 miles west of Chicago. It has an enrollment of more than 25,000, including a graduate student body of over 6,400.
