It now appears that Roxanna Brown died of a perforated gastric ulcer, but
> we don't know what kind of medical attention she received, after the
> intake screening, as her condition worsened over the ensuing days. In the
> absence of a lawsuit, I'm skeptical about getting straight answers because
> the resistance to outside inspection that is normal in prisons is
> compounded by the extra secretiveness of this federal administration. I'd
> like to think that what happened to Roxanna Brown would not have happened
> in our state prisons, with which I work closely, but also know that
> shorter-term jails and detention centers often fail to provide prompt and
> adequate attention to prisoners' medical needs. Some fifteen years ago,
> an inmate in the King County jail died of acute peritonitis, despite his
> complaints and the urgent entreaties of men in the surrounding cells. It
> would be shameful if Roxanna Brown died because she was treated like a
> common criminal, because neither she nor those we call "common criminals"
> deserve the kind of treatment meted out in many of our country's jails.
