Laos hydroplants pushed back
Published: May 1, 2008 at 12:33 PM
BANGKOK, May 1 (UPI) -- Laos needs energy sources until its delayed hydropower plants are complete.
Pushed-back construction of three hydropower plants in Laos has forced the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand to secure electricity reserves, the Bangkok Post reported.
Increased building costs of transmission lines linking the proposed plants to the Thai grid slowed the building project, but the company obtained loans from the Asian Development Bank, said Egat deputy governor Vinit Tangnoi.
The three plants include the 440-megawatt Nam Ngum 3, developed by Thailand-based MDX and Ratchaburi Holding Plc and Marubeni of Japan; the 523-megawatt Nam Theun 1 by Gamuda of Malaysia and SET-listed Egco Group and the 261-megawatt Nam Ngeip, by Kansai of Japan and Egat Inter Co. of Thailand.
All three plants were scheduled to generate power for Egat in 2013 or 2014. Until then, Vinit said Egat will ask the existing plants to increase their power output in order to prevent power shortages.
Without some action, Vinit said the country's power reserves would be below 15 percent by the time the new plants come online.
