Laos, Viet Nam agree on railway link

HA NOI — Viet Nam and Laos have agreed to start preliminary
work on a railway linking the two countries, deputy director
of the Lao Railway Authority Sonesack N. Ngansana told Vietnam
News Agency.

The 150km line will run from Viet Nam’s Quang Binh Province to
Thakhet District, in Lao’s Khammouan Province. The railway is
expected to cost around US$350 million because of the
mountainous terrain it willl have to pass through.

Survey work should be completed in around 10 months, with Viet
Nam meeting the cost of the preliminary work, the deputy
director said.

This friendship railway is part of the Greater Mekong
Sub-region Development Programme.

It is expected to play a significant role in Laos’s
socio-economic development, Sonesack said. — VNS
