Samak Asean tour likely to start in Laos

Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej may visit neighbouring Laos on
his first official trip abroad, tentatively scheduled for
later this month or early March, Foreign Minister Noppadon
Pattama said.

Mr Samak intends to promote a foreign policy aiming to foster
strong relations with neighbouring countries, he said.

Mr Noppadon also said he would attend the Association of
Southeast Asian Nations ministerial meeting in Singapore on
February 19 to meet with his counterparts, but denied reports
that he planned to meet former prime minister Thaksin
Shinawatra in the city state.

"I have had private discussions with Mr Thaksin on the phone,
(and) he affirmed his return to Thailand before May, not
today, as some media reported," said the ousted premier's
former legal adviser.

"He probably will not be there by the time I arrive."

It will be Mr Noppadon's first trip abroad since the former
legal adviser of the ousted premier took office.
