Non-academic Fellowships on Public Policy Issues
Open Society Institute
We would like to alert you to a new Open Society Institute (OSI) fellowship to support scholars, journalists, activists, policy experts and others to work on projects that inspire public debate and shape policy.
The Open Society Fellowship is open to individuals from around the world and we are keen to identify candidates working on Southeast Asia. The Fellowship focuses on four areas: National Security and the Open Society; Citizenship, Membership and Marginalization; Strategies and Tools for Advocacy and Citizen Engagement; and Understanding Authoritarianism. We will also support a limited number of fellows whose projects fall outside these areas but are germane to OSI’s mission. Fellows' projects may include books, articles, documentary films and photography, online media, and efforts to seed new campaigns and organizations.
Proposals are reviewed on a rolling basis and there are no application deadlines. The fellowship does not fund programs of study or dissertation research. More details are available at http://www.soros.org/initiatives/fellowship.

Florence Tan Moeson Fellowship Program
Library of Congress
The Asian Division of the Library of Congress is pleased to announce the Florence Tan Moeson Fellowship for 2009.
The purpose of the fellowship is to provide individuals with the opportunity to pursue research on East, Southeast, and/or South Asia (including the overseas Asian communities), using the unparalleled collections of the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. The grants are for a minimum of five business days of research and are to be used to cover travel to and from Washington, overnight accommodations, and photocopying; or, to cover expenses incurred while traveling to the Library of Congress to engage in scholastic research in the area of Asian studies. Up to 15 awards are available from $300 to $2,500. Graduate students, independent scholars, community college teachers, researchers without regular teaching appointments, and librarians with a need for fellowship support are especially encouraged to apply. Awards are announced in December.
The Asian Division’s collections are among the most significant outside of Asia and comprise over 3 million books, periodicals, newspapers, manuscripts and microforms in the languages of East, South and Southeast Asia. Initiated in 1869 with a gift of ten works in 933 volumes that was offered to the United States by the Emperor of China, the Asian collections have become one of the most accessible and comprehensive sources of Asian language materials in the world. The collections span a diversity of subjects from China, Japan, Korea, the South Asian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. For further information about the collection, please visit our web site at http://www.loc.gov/rr/asian/ or go to “Ask A Librarian"
Applications are accepted online only http://lcasianfriends.org/application/index.php?sid=5 and must be submitted no later than September 30, 2008.
