The University of British Columbia invites applications for
the Tung
Lin Kok Yuen Canada Foundation Visiting Professorship in
Buddhism and
Contemporary Society. Offered through collaboration between the
Institute of Asian Research (IAR) and the Department of Asian
Studies,
the Visiting Professor will support the Tung Lin Kok Yuen Canada
Foundation Program in Buddhism and Contemporary Society. The
Program
coordinates and promotes the study of Buddhism as it has
relevance for
the world today, particularly with regard to issues of public
policy
and social justice.
The Visiting Professor will teach an undergraduate class on
Introduction to Buddhism at the Department of Asian Studies
and will
lead a graduate seminar on Buddhism and Contemporary Society
in the
Religion and Public Policy module at the Institute of Asian
Research.
The Visiting Professor will also be expected to participate in
the
academic community of IAR and the Department of Asian Studies
and to
offer various public lectures and symposia. The successful
candidate
will teach two courses during Term 2 (January - April 2008),
renewable
at the sole discretion of the University.
The Tung Lin Kok Yuen Canada Foundation Visiting Professorship
is
expected to attract applications from scholars contemplating
sabbatical
or other leave during the period of appointment. Applicants
for this
Visiting Professorship must have a Ph.D. and demonstrated
excellence in
teaching and research on Buddhism and its application in the
contemporary world. Applicants must have the ability to conduct
research in at least one Asian language other than English.
Applications should also provide the names and addresses of
three
referees, current curriculum vitae, sample course outlines for
the two
courses, and a sample of published research. Applications
should be
sent by September 15, 2007 (postmarked).
