Foodscapes of Southeast Asia
The York Centre for Asian Research (YCAR) and Founder's
College, York University, Toronto, Canada, will host
Foodscapes of Southeast Asia on Friday, February 29, 2008.
This event will explore the relation between food consumption
and food production in Southeast Asia. The afternoon consists
of two panels of academic papers from different disciplinary
perspectives with ample time for discussion. Currently, we
expect to have presentations on the natural food revolution in
Thailand, street foods of Hanoi, steamed rice cakes as
representations of local identities in the Philippines, Women
entrepreneurs in the food industry in Southeast Asia and the
use of seaweed in the Philippines.
Attention will also be drawn to the multi-sensorial aspects of
food. While the academic discourse on food is often
text-based, knowledge about food is also coded in taste and
vision; and our personal experiences with food reflect the
integration of these different approaches to knowledge
production. We will have at least one multimedia presentation
entitled "Doing Lunch in Salaya."
The afternoon ends with a presentation by photographers and
cookbook writers, Jeff Alford and Naomi Daguid, best-selling
authors of Seductions of Rice, Hot Sour Salty Sweet, and
Mangoes and Curry Leaves. They will present "Hot Sour Salty
Sweet: A Culinary Journey along the Mekong River," followed by
a special Southeast Asian meal.
If you would like to present a paper, please send a title and
short abstract to <ycar at yorku.ca> by January 18, 2008. Works
in progress by graduate students are particularly welcome.
For information about the program, please contact Professor
Penny Van Esterik at <esterik at yorku.ca>, or 77782.
If you are interested in attending, please email
<ycar at yorku.ca> for more details.

Call for Papers
3rd Singapore Graduate Forum on Southeast Asia
The Asia Research Institute (ARI) of the National University
of Singapore (NUS) invites applications from postgraduate
students who are engaged in research on Southeast Asia to
attend the 3rd Singapore Graduate Forum on Southeast Asia
Studies on 24 25 July 2008.
Marking the completion of the Asia Research Institute's ASEAN
Research Scholars Programme 2008, the Forum provides a
platform for communication and cooperation among the
postgraduate students as they mature into the next generation
of academic leaders.
Postgraduate students working on Southeast Asia are invited to
submit abstracts based either on work in progress that is at
an advanced stage (i.e. already completed data collection and
analysis), or on completed work. NUS students are encouraged
to take advantage of this unprecedented opportunity to
interact and exchange ideas with students from ASEAN as well
as those from other regions whose interests focus on Southeast
Asia.
This two-day workshop, the third of an annual series of forums
for graduate students who work on Southeast Asia, will be
organised thematically. Themes will include (but are not
limited to) issues in religion, politics, economy, gender,
culture, migration, and population and social change.
In addition to student presentations, experts of the region
will also be invited to give keynote speeches, sharing their
insights on challenges and issues facing contemporary social
science scholarship.
Registration fees and Singapore expenses will be covered for
those whose abstracts are accepted for presentation. If
necessary, students may also apply for some funding to cover
regional travel costs.
Graduate students should submit a 400-word abstract of their
proposed paper using the PROPOSAL FORM
(http://www.ari.nus.edu.sg/showfile.asp?eventfileid=363) to Ms
Valerie Yeo at valerie.yeo at nus.edu.sg no later than 16 May
2008. Successful applicants will be notified by 2 June 2008.
The abstract should clarify the substantive issues which your
paper will address and be firmly grounded in your own research
project. Using the format given, the abstract should include
information on objectives, methods, and findings, as well as
explain the original contribution the research makes to the
field of study.
Please include your name, institutional affiliation, e-mail
address and other contact information. One confidential letter
of recommendation from a supervisor should also be forwarded
to this address by the same date.
Those selected have to submit full-length papers, of around
5,000 words in length, by 11 July 2008.
