SOUTHEAST ASIAN STUDIES FACULTY POSITION
National University of Singapore

The Southeast Asian Studies Programme, National University of
Singapore, seeks applications from scholars specializing in
contemporary mainland Southeast Asia (in particular Vietnam,
Laos, Cambodia or Myamnar) at the Assistant Professor or
Associate Professor (tenure track) level, commencing July
2007. Preference will be shown to those who engage in research
on contemporary social issues. Applicants must be committed to
working and teaching in an interdisciplinary environment with
an area studies perspective. Candidates should be fluent in at
least one mainland Southeast Asian language and show evidence
of a strong publication record, or the potential to develop
one. A Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment. To apply,

COMPARATIVE AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES FACULTY POSITIONS
Stanford University

Stanford University, The School of Humanities and Sciences, in
conjunction with the University’s International Initiative,
seeks to appoint several scholars for tenured and tenure track
positions in comparative and international studies. These
appointments will be made in the departments of Economics,
History, Political Science and Sociology under the auspices of
the Division of International, Comparative and Area Studies.
The Department of Sociology seeks to appoint a scholar with
research interests on Asia (East, Southeast, or South) or the
Middle East. Applicants must demonstrate excellence based on
disciplinary standards as well as field experience, expertise,
and demonstrated commitment to research on the region. We will
consider candidates at all levels of seniority, but preference
will be shown to junior scholars in the fields of economic
sociology, organizations, political sociology, stratification
and small group processes. Candidates should request letters
of recommendation from three referees and send a letter of
application, CV, a statement of research interests, and
samples of recent written work. To insure full consideration,
all materials should be received by December 15, 2006.

FELLOWSHIP AND TEACHING POSITIONS WITH VIA

NEW! COMMUNITY SERVICE FELLOWSHIPS IN VIETNAM
In 2007, VIA will offer FOUR fully-funded fellowships for
exceptional college graduates who have a demonstrated and
ongoing to Vietnam or the Vietnamese-American community. 
Fellows will be posted at one of VIA's 11 posts in Vietnam and
receive round-trip airfare, housing and living, relocation
allowance, materials allowance, insurance, readjustment
allowance, and $1000 for a community service project. This
fellowship program is funded by the Ford Foundation.

LONG-TERM ENGLISH TEACHING/RESOURCE IN CHINA, INDONESIA,
VIETNAM, MYANMAR, LAOS, AND THAILAND
For those seeking a more in-depth and long-term experience,
VIA offers 1- and 2-year volunteer positions at public
schools, universities, research institutions, and local
nonprofits.  Volunteers receive housing and a living stipend,
and either teach English or work on community development
programs.  In addition to cross-cultural training, VIA
provides two weeks of TESOL training.  Additional TESOL
training strongly recommended.

SUMMER PROGRAMS IN INDONESIA, VIETNAM, AND CHINA
VIA offers three short-term summer programs.  In the Bali
Service-Learning program in Indonesia, participants live with
a Balinese family, study language and culture, and volunteer
at a local NGO.  In the Teach-in-Hue program in Vietnam,
participants teach American culture to Vietnamese university
students, organize student activities, and visit local NGOs. 
In the Traditional Chinese Medicine program in China,
participants learn about traditional Chinese medicine and
engage in cultural exchange with Chinese medical students.  No
experience is required for these programs.

TRAINING, SUPPORT, IMPORTANT DATES, AND PARTICIPATION FEES
VIA is a small organization committed to providing individual
and group training and support.   This includes: stateside
orientation, cross-cultural training, and in-field staff
support.  For 1- and 2-year volunteers only:  VIA provides two
weeks of TESOL training (in Thailand), three weeks of language
instruction, in-country orientation, staff visits, and an
annual conference.  Applications are due Feb. 22, 2007.
Financial assistance is provided to those with financial need.

SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Targeted Fields: Humanities. Life Sciences. Physical Sciences.
Social Sciences. School of Arts and Architecture. School of
Public Health. Specific fields fellowships are available for:
Animal behavior, ecology, and environmental science, including
an emphasis on the tropics. Anthropology, archaeology,
astrophysics and astronomy. Earth sciences and paleobiology.
Evolutionary and systematic biology. History of science and
technology. History of art, especially American contemporary.
African and Asian art, twentieth-century. American crafts, and
decorative arts. Social and cultural history of the United
States. Folklife.

Open To: Prospective/Current Graduate Students. Students
Working on Doctoral Dissertation. Postdoctoral Scholars.

Citizenship: No citizenship requirements.

Eligibility Requirements: Postdoctoral: PhD awarded within the
last 7 years. Predoctoral: PhD course work completed.
Graduate: at least one semester of graduate study completed.

Program Description: Three award programs are offered for
research in residence at the museums, research institutes, and
offices of the Smithsonian Institution. Open to postdoctoral
scholars, predoctoral students conducting dissertation
research, and graduate students conducting individual
research. Postdoctoral stipends valued at $35,000 annual and
predoctoral stipends valued at $20,000 annual, are for periods
of 3 to 12 months. Graduate stipends are $4,500 for a 10 week
period.
