Workshop Description



On 20-22 January 2006 the Regional Studies Program, School of
Liberal Arts, Walailak University, and the Department of
Cross-cultural and Regional Studies, University of Copenhagen,
organized a three-day Workshop titled "Voices of Islam in
Europe and Southeast Asia". The aim of the Workshop was to
gather leading scholars in Europe and Southeast Asia, from
diverse disciplinary backgrounds, to discuss changes in the
study of Islam and Muslim societies and how these changes are
impacting upon our understanding of Islam and Muslims in
Europe and Southeast Asia.



The Regional Studies Program, in conjunction with our
principal sponsor, the Southeast Asian Studies Regional
Exchange Program (SEASREP), are pleased to announce a
follow-up Workshop that will develop the themes raised in the
first Workshop. However the aim of this workshop will be to
highlight the research being carried out by younger scholars
in Southeast Asia on current issues in Islamic Studies and
other social science research on Islam and Muslims in
Southeast Asia.



Objectives



The objectives of the Workshop are:



1.      To highlight the diversity of discourses about Islam
and Muslim societies in contemporary Southeast Asia.



2.      To support and highlight the latest research currently
being carried out by young Southeast Asian scholars in the
field of Islamic Studies and on the study of Muslim societies
in Southeast Asia.



3.      To produce a published volume of essays on these themes.

Participants



The Workshop invites scholars working in Islamic Studies and
on Muslim societies in Southeast Asia, primarily, but not
exclusively, from the Southeast Asian region. The Workshop
Organizers will give preference to younger scholars and early
career researchers. Participants may be university lecturers
or graduate students, NGO workers, or researchers from other
institutions based in Southeast Asia.



Workshop Themes



The Workshop committee will accept proposals on all aspects of
contemporary research in Islamic Studies and the study of
Muslims in Southeast Asia. However particular consideration
will be given to proposals that address the following issues:



Trends in Islamic Studies in Southeast Asia

Trends in the Study of Southeast Asian Muslims

Islam and the Social Sciences

Islam and Liberalism

Islam, Southeast Asia, and America
Southeast Asian Islam and the Middle East

Wahabism in Southeast Asia

Discourses of "Moderate", "Conservative", and "Radical" Islam

Islam and Gender Issues

Islam in Contemporary Southeast Asian Politics



Grants



Partial grants may be provided for selected participants from
Southeast Asian countries. The grants will cover travel and
accommodation costs during the Workshop at Nakhon Si
Thammarat. However, the Workshop committee encourages
participants to also seek other funding. Successful
participants will be selected by the Workshop committee based
primarily on the originality and quality of their paper
proposal. However the region that their research covers, and
the gender of the researcher will also be taken into account
in the interests of achieving a broader representation of
topics and scholars.
