[Campus Notice] Upcoming Change to How You Access Your UCR R'Mail Account

Dear R’Mail User,

Please be advised that after July 1, 2023, you will no longer be able to
log into R’Mail using basic authentication.

What is basic authentication?

This means that you may have applications and/or mobile devices that rely only
on a username and password to connect to R’Mail services. While this is a
common method of data protection, it’s not as secure as a multi-step
authentication method.

Why is this change taking place?

As the name implies, basic authentication is basic and, therefore, not
secure enough to meet UCR’s information security standards. As a result,
UCR is mandated by the UC Office of the President to disable basic
authentication.

How will my user experience change?

EMERITI & RETIREES

ALL OTHER UCR USERS

Emeriti and retirees will still be able to access their email via a web
browser by visiting https://rmail.ucr.edu. Email access via web browser
will not change and is the recommended way to access R’Mail. Emeriti and
retirees are not required to authenticate via UCR DUO if accessing via the
web browser.

After July 1, 2023, you must connect using a modern two-step authentication
method that requires the use of your username, password, and secondary
authentication via UCR DUO

.

After July 1, 2023, anyone trying to access R’Mail on their computer or
phone via an outdated connection (i.e., IMAP, POP, or SMTP) will need to
remove their email account and then re-add it using a modern connection.
Similarly, anyone using a version of Outlook that is older than Outlook
2016 will need to update the Outlook email client and Google Workspace Sync
for Outlook to a newer version to continue accessing R’Mail via the client.
Email access via web browser will not change and is the recommended way to
access R’Mail.
