Please Read - Group Cleanup This Week

Hi all, 

Group cleanup time has come! Please read this email in its entirety.

BY TOMORROW (TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 29):
	o   Everyone:
§  Notebook upkeep and backup

·      Upkeep: include all data, pictures, observations etc.

·      Backup all important information on the group drive! You can export notebooks if you use a Windows computer (like the group computer)

·      In the file-name of the exported notebook, please include the export date

§  Return all chemicals and bioreagents/equipment to the inventory

§  Complete personal inventory

·      Log in any ordered chemicals and find a home for all chemicals in the “receiving boxes”

§  Write your name on anything in the food safe refrigerator. (All unlabeled food/tupperware/etc. will be thrown out)

§  People with personal inventories of chemicals

·      Re-evaluate current stock (If you are not using any chemical in the near future, move it to an appropriate chemical cabinet!)

o   Chemical Waste Group Jobs:

§  Imex, Lan – Double check inventory of waste, ensure all waste is stored properly (capped, not too full, no LD50<50mg chemicals in 4L bottles, etc <https://ehs.ucr.edu/waste#waste_determination_waste_disposal_guide>.), create labels as needed for any waste bottles

·      Request waste pickup immediately!

·      Consolidate half-empty solvent bottles into single solvent bottles

o   Chemical Safety:

§  Matt – Visual inspection of every fume hood, confirm chemicals are returned, waste is labeled properly, ensure that lab is in-line with EH&S standards <https://ehs.ucr.edu/laboratory/chemical>
o   Bio Safety:

§  Nhien –  Visual inspection of bioreagent area, ensure that lab is in-line with EH&S standards <https://ehs.ucr.edu/laboratory/biosafety>
	

Day 1:  WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30
WORK CAN BE DONE THIS DAY AS LONG AS THE FOLLOWING ARE COMPLETED BY THE END OF THE DAY
§  Meet @ 10 AM

§  Organize all personal drawers

§  Organize your fume hood

·      Wipe down all surfaces

·      Quench old chemicals

·      Remove unlabeled stuff

·      Clean out bomb flasks no longer in use

§  Return chemical bottles to original locations

§  Clean all glassware, rinse with acetone, leave on drying rack (round bottom flasks, Erlenmeyer flasks, distillation adapters etc.)

·      Transfer contents of round bottom flasks to vials

§  Organize and clean your desk

§  Replace all vacuum oil – Contact Matt for assistance, if needed

Turn off all ovens so they are at room temperature and easily cleaned the following day 


Day 2: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1
NO LAB WORK TO BE PERFORMED UNTIL ALL OF THE FOLLOWING ARE COMPLETED
§  Meet @ 9 AM

§  You can find your assigned group cleanup job in the attached document. For every cleanup job you are assigned, you must also clean the area above the benches you are cleaning, including the space above personal benches.

§  When you finish your assigned area, ask your group cleanup coordinator to check your area. Then, help others with their assigned areas until all the assigned areas are complete.  This will help balance the workloads since some jobs may take longer than others.
