The Art of Stopping Hate
Tuesday, January 6th
Commons 268, 10am-9pm
*What do hate and/or hope look like to you? Create or drop off
drawings, cartoons, paintings, etc. during the hours listed. Various
materials will be available to create art pieces that represent The Art
of Stopping Hate. The top judged artwork submissions will be displayed
in the Commons during "Stop the Hate Week" and the top three pieces will
be unveiled at the "Not in our Town" movie screening on January 15,
2009.
Real Issues, Reel Activism: "For the Bible Tells Me So"
Monday, January 12th
Commons 302s, 6:30pm-9pm
* Is the Bible an excuse to hate? Following the lives of five
individuals and informed by such respected voices as Bishop Desmond
Tutu, Harvard's Peter Gomes, Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg and Reverend
Jimmy Creech, For the Bible Tells Me So offers healing, clarity and
understanding to anyone caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual
identity. A discussion panel will follow the film including various
clergy members, allies, and members of the LGBT Community.
Real Issues, Reel Activism: Media that Matters Film Festival
Selections-Gender/Women
Tuesday, January 13th
Commons 302s, 6:30pm-9pm
* How might media matter with Stopping the Hate? This evening of
short films from the Media that Matters Film Festival will explore
issues related to gener/women. "Girl Like Me," "Slip of the Tongue,"
"Vision Test," "Grace," "Diana," and "In Transit," will address notions
of beauty, sexual violence, genital mutilation, AIDs, and domestic
violence. Throughout the evening, presenters from the Women's Resource
Center and R.E.A.C.H. will facilitate discussions regarding the topics
covered by the films.
Real Issues, Reel Activism: "Mirrors of Privilege: Making Whiteness
Visible"
Wednesday, January 14th
Commons 268, Noon-1:30pm
*Making Whiteness Visible is a documentary for UC Riverside staff,
faculty and students who are interested in justice, personal growth and
community making. It features the experiences of white women and men who
have worked to gain insight into what it means to challenge notions of
racism and white supremacy in the United States. A brief discussion will
follow the film.
"Students Coalitions Building Bridges at UCR" Workshop
Wednesday, January 14th
Commons 268, 3pm-5pm
* This student leadership workshop will consist of interactive
activities designed to open doors for dialogue related to hate bias
incidents/crimes at UC Riverside and to build coalitions to build
community at UC Riverside. Hosted by the Hate Bias Response Team and
trained NCBI facilitators.
Real Issues, Reel Activism: "Crossing Arizona"
Wednesday, January 14th

* Crossing Arizona is a documentary that discusses the immigration
debate from various perspectives. Following the film, a discussion panel
of social activists, faculty members, graduate students, and students
will occur to discuss various perspectives on the recent immigration
debates.
Defining and Addressing Hate Bias Crimes/Incidents
Thursday, January 15th
Commons 268, 3pm-5pm
* The Anti-Defamation League will present a student leadership
workshop on definitions and resources related to hate bias crimes and
incidents. This workshop will also present on how communities such as UC
Riverside can address hate bias related issues. This program is part of
the First Year Success Series. Please signup at success.ucr.edu.
Real Issues, Reel Activism: "Not in Our Town" and "Not in R' House"
Thursday, January 15th
Commons 302s, 6:30pm-9pm
* Not in Our Town and Not in R' House are films which discuss how
local communities combat hate in their towns. The Not in Our Town
documentary deals with specific hate incidents that have affected
different towns in Northern California and the community responses that
have followed. Not in R' House is a documentary produced at UC Riverside
discussing how UC Riverside students can combat hate and help to build a
healthy campus community.
Culture Clash
Friday, January 16th
University Theatre, 8pm
Tickets: Students $14, General $28
* This production holds a unique role in American Arts as the most
prominent Chicano-Latino performance troupe. The writers/actors dig deep
into American's racialized culture to formulate their college
performance with their signature sociopolitical satire and comedy.
A Musical Performance Dedicated to "Stopping Hate"
ASPB Barn Series
Wednesday, January 21st
Barn, 7:30pm
* As part of the ASPB Barn Series, this evening will include
performances by " Mike Park" and various local artists dedicated to
social justice and the power of music to bring communities together.
