Hey all -
We had our STEP meeting today to discuss how we're going to proceed
with the book club.
IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO JOIN! Several of you mentioned that you were
interested, but were not able to make today's meeting. There is still
time for folks to sign up.
We're reading the following books:
Let Your LIfe Speak by Parker Palmer
Creating Inclusive Campus Environments by Shaun R. Harper - new from
NASPA
We're starting with the Palmer book for October, and will begin the
Harper book in January. The deal I have worked out with Susan, is
that she will pay for the Harper book for folks who are participating
if we pay for our own Palmer book. You will want to order your Palmer
book soon as our first discussion will be Oct. 20.
You can get the Palmer book new for $12 from Amazon.com (around $8
used), normally it retails for $18. If you sign up for book club and
attend October's meeting, then your Harper book will be covered. I
will only order enough books for those at October's meeting. (So let
me know if you have a conflict with October, but plan on participating.)
Here's the schedule for the pace of the book club, and the lead person
for each month:
October 20 Palmer ch. 1-3 Jami Grosser
November 17 Palmer ch. 4-6 Amalia Isais
December - Retreat?? - TBD - last year it was Friday of finals week
(Dec. 12, 2008) - no book club
January 26 Harper ch. 1-2 Felicity Osowski
February 23 Harper ch. 3-4 Jeff Eppley
March 16 Harper ch. 5-6 Kara Devaney
April 20 Harper ch. 7-8 Jen Miller
May 18 Harper ch. 9-10 Elena Perez
June 15 Harper ch. 11-12 TBA
**Each Lead will be in charge of hosting the meeting, reserving the
room, sending out reminder emails, etc. and facilitating discussion.
THERE IS STILL ROOM TO HELP FACILITATE. If you have an interest in
the topics discussed (and I realize you may need to look at the book
chapters to determine this) let the person know. We welcome co-
leads. Leads are encouraged to prepare discussion questions, etc.
Goals for the book club will be discussed at the first meeting, and
subsequent discussions about follow-up activities and how these
concepts relate to our work will also take place. Please be thinking
about your personal and professional goals for our discussions.
If you have any questions, let me know. Sorry about the long email.
I'm very excited about Book Club. Thanks so much for your enthusiasm
about this new venture.
See you in October to start talking about Letting Our Life Speak!
