Hey STEPpers!
If you haven't heard already, I have accepted a new job at Cal Poly
Pomona. I will be the Coordinator of the Pride Center (LGBT Center)
starting at the end of this month. Friday, Oct. 24 is my last day at
UCR.
I am still planning on leading Monday's book club discussion and will
make sure that the Harper books are ordered before I leave. I am
emailing folks now, to solicit one or two people who might be
interested in taking over STEP.
Coordination mainly involves logistical concerns. This would include
primarily the listserv administration (very easy), and general
scheduling etc. Since folks agreed to do book club, each month's
facilitators have already been decided with the exception of a couple
of months in spring. Whomever would take over would need to recruit
folks to lead those discussions. The other point of leadership
required would be for the retreat if folks decide to have one again in
December. The past two years, a committee has come together to plan
the event, but I've usually been the one to maintain communication
with Susan Allen Ortega about financial support. All in all,
depending on your vision for STEP, leading the group isn't all that
complicated.
I created STEP with the intention of creating space for new and mid-
level professionals to connect, provide support, share ideas, have
discussion, and create professional development opportunities. Things
I felt were missing within the infrastructure of student affairs
(especially when Housing and Career folks aren't even in our
division). It seems that throughout the years, others have felt
similarly. Participation ebbs and flows, as does many activities we
do outside of our job description. But ultimately I feel that the
intention is still alive, as is the need for the space. I have given
vision, along with others, to what STEP is today, and now it's ready
for a new vision and new leadership. I think change and growth are
critical to the group's continued success.
If you have an interest, please let me know either before the meeting
or at next Monday's meeting.
Thanks so much for being apart of STEP! I know that it has brought me
support in the time I have been here, as well as some of my favorite
people at UCR:)
