Subject: Open rank English generalist position @ Menlo College
To: <litsci-l at duke.edu>

Dear SLSA-ers,

I’m delighted to announce that Menlo’s running an open-rank search for an
English professor

this
year. There’s quite a bit of flexibility in areas of specialty, hence the
generalist tag.

Please consider applying! I’m on the search committee and happy to answer
questions.

*Position Overview*

Menlo College seeks a qualified instructor to offer courses in English to
non-major, undergraduate students. Key responsibilities include teaching
undergraduate courses in English composition and literature courses. We are
particularly interested in a candidate with a strong commitment to
excellence in teaching. A successful candidate should also have an active
research program and a record of published scholarship appropriate to the
desired rank. The College seeks candidates who will contribute to diversity
and equal opportunity in higher education through their teaching or other
related areas.

The primary mission of Menlo College is to offer a small, diverse four-year
undergraduate college experience with a variety of majors in business and
psychology. Menlo also sponsors two graduate programs: an MA in Sport and
Performance Psychology, and an MS in Information Systems. The undergraduate
curriculum is designed to prepare students for careers while integrating
their studies within a liberal arts foundation. The College is located in
Silicon Valley, which allows students a variety of internship experiences
and real-world learning. Menlo is a small but growing school (~850
enrollment) that offers small classes that allow close faculty-student
interaction. Menlo College is also a federally-recognized Minority Serving
Institution (MSI) – both as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and as an
Asian American and Native American, Pacific Islander Serving Institution
(AANAPISI). One-third of Menlo College students are first generation, and
more than fifty percent identify as students of color.
*Qualifications*

The successful candidate will have an advanced degree in English or in a
related field from a reputable university in hand prior to the start of the
Fall 2024 semester (August 2024). A doctorate is required for appointment
as professor of any rank; MA will be considered for appointment as a
lecturer. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong record of
effective undergraduate teaching as the instructor of record. Candidates
must be able and qualified to teach classes at the undergraduate level in
English composition and literature. They must also possess strong
interpersonal skills and be able to work in a collaborative and collegial
environment.
*Application Process*

Submitted applications should include a letter of interest that discusses
teaching philosophy and research interests, a current CV, five-page writing
sample (excerpt of published work), one-page summary of teaching
evaluations, and names and contact information for 3 references. Letters of
recommendation may be requested at later date. Submission of materials as
PDF attachments is strongly encouraged. Please submit materials by Oct 15,
2023 to the Director of Human Resources at hr at menlo.edu.
