Greetings, and welcome back, SFCS scholars,

I'd like to let you know of an upcoming opportunity thanks to our friends
at Cal State Los Angeles. You may have seen the call for papers for EagleCon
<https://www.eagleconla.com/convention>, a convention on speculative
fiction across media at CSU L.A. happening October 18-21. The guest
speakers and presenters come from the ranks of fantasy and science fiction
authors, comics, TV/film art direction, visual effects, gaming, and more.
One distinguished guest at the conference will be author Nisi Shawl, who
will be receiving an award from Cal State L.A. and engaging in a
conversation with one of our own UCR Ph.D. candidates, Jasmine Moore.

The submission deadline has passed, but you can still present on a panel
thanks to our programming partnership! We've reserved a place on the
schedule, *Friday, October 20*, 11:20a.m-12:30p.m., for a panel of emerging
scholars to present research/work-in-progress on any aspect of speculative
fiction, in any medium. If you haven't presented at a conference before, or
you have material you're seeking to share with a new audience, this is a
great chance to do so. Presentations are 12-15 minutes, for a
non-specialist audience. Friday's events take place at the conference
hotel, the Courtyard L.A. Monterey Park
<https://www.marriott.com/event-reservations/reservation-link.mi?id=1678828310246&key=GRP&app=resvlink>
.

If you would like to present at EagleCon as part of this session, the SFCS
program will provide you with a small grant-in-aid ($200) via electronic
funds transfer from the English department to defray the registration fee
(which is $60 for graduate students) and costs associated with getting
there and back. We can accommodate up to 4 presenters.

If you're interested in presenting through this opportunity, please email
me (andre.carrington at ucr.edu) an abstract of up to 250 words and a brief
bio (indicating your degree program, year, and exam or dissertation
research topic). Please send this information by Monday, October 2. You'll
be informed of your selection by Friday, October 6.

In addition, the college is providing a bus to transport students from
UCR's campus to the EagleCon site and back on Wednesday, October 18, and
again on Saturday, October 20. We have room for 40 people, total, on each
of these dates. Stay tuned for more information on how to sign up.

See you soon!
