There are two positions in Communication and Media Studies at Michigan
Technological University, Humanities Department.



*#1 Assistant Professor of Digital Media*



The Department of Humanities at Michigan Technological University
invites applications
for a tenure track Assistant Professor in the field of Media and
Communication Studies, or a closely related field, with specialization
in digital
media and/or data journalism. We seek candidates focused on social media
issues involving such topics as algorithmic discrimination and data
justice, platform economies, governance/regulatory frameworks, infrastructures
(technical and/or material), surveillance, media industries, and/or publics
(e.g., studies of misinformation/disinformation, civic engagement,
platformized news and journalism). Candidates may have experience/interest
in methodological approaches including qualitative, quantitative, critical,
interpretive, or mixed-methods. Ability to teach methods and tools for
data collection
and analysis is highly desirable, as well as a demonstrated commitment to
diversity, equity, justice, and human flourishing that are the hallmarks of
the Humanities.

*#2: Open Rank Professor of Communication*

The Department of Humanities at Michigan Technological University invites
applications for an Open Rank Professor of Communication to begin August
2022. Candidates should have a record of excellent teaching and scholarly
work in Communication particularly linked to technology and communication
in the public interest, with specialization in the fields of Human-Machine
Communication (HMC) or Computer-Mediated Communication. Areas of research
may include but are not limited to the intersection of human-machine
communication and the following: AI, linguistics, interpersonal/group
communication, organizational communication, disability studies, media and
representation, culture and everyday life. We seek candidates leading
empirical studies (qualitative, quantitative, interpretive, or
mixed-methods) favoring a critical approach, who desire to be involved in
interdisciplinary research, and who are committed to the principles of
equity, diversity and inclusion within research and teaching. A
demonstrated ability to secure grant funding would also be highly
desirable. Ability to teach courses at the undergraduate level in
linguistics, interpersonal, group, and/or organizational communication is
also desirable.

The department's faculty teach and engage in research that both shapes and
benefits from a rich multi-disciplinary environment. The usual teaching
load is 2 courses (6 hrs.) per semester pre-tenure with competitive salary and
benefits.



Applicants should upload a letter of application, curriculum vitae, writing
sample, evidence       of teaching effectiveness, and names and contact
information for three reference providers. At least one letter must address
the applicant's teaching abilities. Reference letters and additional
materials will be requested at a later stage of the hiring process. Review
of applications for full consideration will begin on Dec. 10, and continue
until the position is filled. Preferred candidates should receive their
Ph.D. in Communication, Media Studies, or closely related field by August 1,
2022.



The Humanities department offers doctoral and master’s degrees in the
interdisciplinary Rhetoric, Theory, and Culture program and undergraduate
major degrees in Communication, Culture, and Media; English; and Scientific
and Technical Communication. Michigan Tech has recently launched nine
