Dear all,
I hope you all had a fantastic Labor Day weekend, and that the summer is
recharging your batteries as we approach the new quarter (still a few
weeks' off!)
It's a brief update this month, starting with one exciting new acquisition
to announce:
- *Weird Fantasy Vol. 1, No. 18*. One of the most remarkable pre-Code
science fiction comic books of the 1950s, this issue is best known for its
inclusion of 'Judgement Day!'—a ground-breaking and progressive short story
that directly confronted segregationist ideology at the height of the Jim
Crow era.
Last month (August 14th-17th) I attended *World Con* in Seattle, which was
a fantastic opportunity to meet potential donors and catch up on all the
happenings in SF/F publishing.
*This* month I'm looking forward to attending *Speculative Fiction Across
Media* <https://sfamla.org/schedule-2025/> in LA, where I'll be ranting
about presenting on the historical and ongoing feminized, sexualized
depictions of AI and robots in popular culture (cc: the recommended Book of
the Month).
Next month is already looking busy; I'll be tabling with colleagues at
the *Riverside
Book Festival *on *October 11th*, paneling at the *LA Archives Bazaar *a
week later, on* October 18th*—and, of course, tabling at the* Inland Empire
Archives Fair <https://events.ucr.edu/event/archives-fair-2025> *on campus!
Do sign up, if you haven't already.
Until next time! Take care, stay cool, stream *Alien: Earth*.
Warmth and light,
Phoenix
*Recommended book of the month:* Sierra Greer, *Annie Bot *(2024)
