Dear all,
Greetings, as we approach High Summer! Campus is quiet, the weather is
suspiciously mild, and the odd tectonic shake has been giving us a bit of
excitement here in the library.
Speaking of excitement: I had a blast at *San Diego Comic Con* this month!
I presented on the topic of what libraries can do for creators and their
materials, on a panel with *Daryl A. Maxwell* (Adult Librarian at Los
Angeles Public Library), *Matthew Noe* (Lead Collection & Knowledge
Management Librarian at Harvard Medical School), *Lauren Salerno* (writer
and former Los Angeles public librarian), and *Misty Jones* (City
Librarian/Director San Diego Public Library) moderated by UCR faculty
member and author *Eric J. Guignard* (Author, *A Graveside Gallery*).
Our conversation was recorded and should be available online soon! We took
a lovely photograph of our panel which you can view on the *Eaton
Collection's Instagram page: @Eatonverse*. Give us a follow if you haven't
already.
In other personal news, I just turned in a chapter on genre in the Harlem
renaissance for a forthcoming Cambridge Companion to... anthology, which
informs my recommended book of the month. It (the book of the month) is a
banger—trust!
We have a couple of exciting acquisitions in the pipeline:
- A *large collection of Czech-language SF* (and a few English
translations), encompassing important Czech SF novels, books of academic
criticism on Czech SF, books on Czech SF artists, Czech translations of
California and US West SF authors (Bradbury, Dick etc.), and samples of
Czech SF magazines and fanzines.
- Around *300 titles of Chinese SF* from the 1980s to the present.
- The latest, four-part issue (166) of *Rowrbrazzle*
Finally: some upcoming events include the *Fall re-opening of the 'Neon in
the Gutters' exhibit* (temporarily taken down for building renovations),
the return of the annual *Archives Fair in October*... and, who knows,
maybe even another *Eaton Symposium* for early 2026...
Warmth and light,
Phoenix
*Recommended book of the month:* Rudolph Fisher, *The Conjure Man Dies *
(1932)
