Dear all,

The temperature is finally climbing, Summer is well and truly on the way—and there are only 76 sleeps to go until Alien: Romulus<https://youtu.be/GTNMt84KT0k?si=2zM5pVSqfkZcDRe2> is released. Good times!

Many of the cyberpunk comics I mentioned in my last email have been cataloged and are ready for use in the reading room. As well as these, I acquired the following items for the Eaton Collection:

  *
Lessing, Doris, The Golden Notebook (1962). A gorgeous first edition of this classic of feminist literature, signed by the author.

  *
Introductions 7: Stories by New Writers (1981). A first edition copy of an anthology notable for being Kazuo Ishiguro's first appearance in a print book.

A very exciting archival collection is also on the horizon, and I will of course keep you posted about that when I can!

May also saw some wonderful conferences and events take place, including Futurity as Praxis: Learning from Octavia E. Butler, at the Huntington, the Eaton Symposium here at UCR, and Ancestral Futures, also at UCR. Kudos to all the hard-working faculty, staff, and students, for putting on such amazing programming!

Next month sees the Nebula Awards (June 6th-9th)—at which I'll be presenting—and the Mini Comic Fest at the Culver Center for the Arts, on June 29th (Mini Comic Fest feat. Black Kirby - UCR ARTS<https://ucrarts.ucr.edu/events/comic-fest-2024/>). Do stop by then if you can; I'll be tabling there with some neat items from the Eaton Collection, and will happily answer any and all sci fi-related questions.

Speaking of which: Eaton Collection materials are to be featured in not one, but two (!) forthcoming documentaries from PBS, who will be coming to film in SCUA later this month. Again: more on that in due course.

Wishing you all a productive and peaceful end to the quarter!

Warmth and Light,

Phoenix

Recommended book of the month: Escape Velocity, Victor Manibo (2024)

We at UCR would like to respectfully acknowledge and recognize our responsibility to the original and current caretakers of this land, water, and air: the Cahuilla, Tongva, Luiseño, and Serrano peoples and all of their ancestors and descendants, past, present, and future. Today this meeting place is home to many Indigenous peoples from all over the world, including UCR faculty, students, and staff, and we are grateful to have the opportunity to live and work on these homelands.
