Dear all,

I hope you're staying cool and hydrated in this fierce heat!

There's been lots of behind-the-scenes work on updating our print collection holdings this month, as well as processing some exciting new (and old!) donations, and I can share the following purchases:

  * We have completed our collection of Walking Tree Press' Cormarë series of publications<http://www.walking-tree.org/who_are_wtp.php> on Tolkien and his work, and have set up a subscription to obtain all future titles in the series.

  *
Willard, John, The Cat and the Canary, 1927. A novelization of the early horror movie<https://archive.org/details/TheCatAndTheCanary1927DVDRipSiRiUsSHaRe> directed by Paul Leni: a foundational precursor to the immortal Universal Monster films starting a couple of years later. This handsome edition will feature in a future exhibit, so look out for it soon!

  * Wright, Henry, Depopulation: a Romance of the Unlikely, 1899. Adding to the Eaton Collection's impressive collection of Utopian literature, this novel is a satirical snapshot of late nineteenth century urban America.

Wishing you all a wonderful summer!

Warmth and light,

Phoenix

Recommended book of the month: Sordidez, E. G. Condé (2023)

We at UCR would like to respectfully acknowledge and recognize our responsibility to the original and current caretakers of this land, water, and air: the Cahuilla, Tongva, Luiseño, and Serrano peoples and all of their ancestors and descendants, past, present, and future. Today this meeting place is home to many Indigenous peoples from all over the world, including UCR faculty, students, and staff, and we are grateful to have the opportunity to live and work on these homelands.
