Dear andré,

I am very pleased to share the Call for Proposals for the upcoming
scholarly workshop, “Claiming Space: A Symposium on Black Futures – Past,
Present, and Potential,” co-hosted by the Smithsonian’s National Air and
Space Museum, National Museum of African American History and Culture, and
National Museum of African Art, as part of our ongoing Afrofuturism
collaboration. The workshop will be held virtually January 27-29.

It was great having you as one of our contemporary history seminar
presenters two years ago, and I would love it if you’d consider submitting
a proposal. We are seeking presentations on five themes – Atlantic Space,
Terrestrial Space, Cyber Space, Outer Space, and Personal Space. The
deadline for proposals is September 10, 2021.

You can learn more at our website, ClaimingSpace.si.edu. Proposals should
be submitted through the website.

And of course I’ll be happy to answer any questions you might have, or to
hear any ideas you have.

(By the way, I didn’t realize you were now at Riverside. Congrats on the
move.)

Cheers,

Matt

PS. We would also appreciate any help you can give us in advertising this
workshop – making sure this CFP is seen by people working in this area. If
you would be willing to share this within your network this will be great.

*Claiming Space:* The communities and individuals who build Afrofuturism
up, as well as those that draw from it, work together to claim and reclaim
space—in the stories we tell of the past and in the visions we imagine of
the future. This Claiming Space Symposium will examine the ever-expanding
reach of Afrofuturist thought across oceans, into land reclamations, up to
the stars, through cyberspace, and inward as Black visionaries look to the
infinite space within.

*Call for proposals is now open! We invite artists, scholars, and thinkers
to submit a proposal to present on one of five themes: *

*Atlantic Space:* Reimaginations of the Middle Passage

*Terrestrial Space:* Reclaiming Landscapes

*Cyber Space:* Political Activism and Afrofuturism in the Digital Age

*Outer Space:* Projecting Histories and Futures onto the Stars

*Personal Space:* Cyborgs and the Afrofuturist Body
