The fellowship program is funded by the UC President’s Global Climate Leadership Council (GCLC) in support of the UC President’s Leading on Climate priority. The goals of the fellowship program are to actively engage students in:</div><div style="color:rgb(32,33,36);font-family:docs-Roboto;font-size:14.6667px"><br>● Shaping the university’s climate action programs and supporting the university’s aggressive goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions while creating a more equitable, sustainable, resilient and healthy world.<br>● Conducting projects that support sustainable agricultural practices and helping campuses and health systems work toward President Drake’s goal of “defining the actions and resources needed to procure at least 25 percent of our own food supplies from sustainable sources by 2025.</div><div style="color:rgb(32,33,36);font-family:docs-Roboto;font-size:14.6667px"><br></div><div style="color:rgb(32,33,36);font-family:docs-Roboto;font-size:14.6667px">UCR welcomes applications for each of the following fellowships:</div><div style="color:rgb(32,33,36);font-family:docs-Roboto;font-size:14.6667px"><br></div><div style="color:rgb(32,33,36);font-family:docs-Roboto;font-size:14.6667px">1) The <b>Climate Action Student Engagement Fellow</b> will work with the <a href="https://sustainability.ucr.edu/" target="_blank">UCR Office of Sustainability</a> to support efforts to engage students in support of UCR's climate action goals. They will develop and disseminate educational materials to build community awareness and generate support for climate action-related projects. The Climate Action Engagement Fellow also will play an important role in communicating student opinions on UC’s climate policy, programs, and actions to university leadership.</div><div style="color:rgb(32,33,36);font-family:docs-Roboto;font-size:14.6667px"><br></div><div style="color:rgb(32,33,36);font-family:docs-Roboto;font-size:14.6667px">2) The <b>Planning (Climate Action Planning or Resilience) Fellow</b> will work with the Office of Sustainability and the <a href="https://insideucr.ucr.edu/stories/2025/05/20/ucr-launches-climate-plan-process" target="_blank">Climate Action & Adaptation Plan </a>process to work on a project that will support the Climate Action & Adaptation Plan drafting and implementation.</div><div style="color:rgb(32,33,36);font-family:docs-Roboto;font-size:14.6667px"><br>3) The <b>Decarbonization Fellow</b> will work with the Office of Sustainability on a project that supports the development and implementation of the <a href="https://sustainability.ucr.edu/ucr-campus-decarbonization-study" target="_blank">UCR Campus Decarbonization Study</a>.</div><div style="color:rgb(32,33,36);font-family:docs-Roboto;font-size:14.6667px"><br></div><div style="color:rgb(32,33,36);font-family:docs-Roboto;font-size:14.6667px">4) The <b>Food Recovery Fellow</b> will work with the <a href="https://basicneeds.ucr.edu/" target="_blank">UCR Basic Needs Department</a> to advance campus food justice through food recovery and education, reducing food waste and addressing food insecurity at UC Riverside. The fellow will oversee and maintain food donation bins; host one educational workshop or event per academic quarter; track and report recovery data and impact; and identify and initiate a partnership with a new food recovery partner (on or off campus) to expand the program’s reach. Please see <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1vwdsH1pnk7_RDHCZEj6HbZrLV9iFkVtRbPR-4i5FVMI/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">this</a><a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1vwdsH1pnk7_RDHCZEj6HbZrLV9iFkVtRbPR-4i5FVMI/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank"> description of expectations and qualifications for the food recovery fellowship</a>. </div><div style="color:rgb(32,33,36);font-family:docs-Roboto;font-size:14.6667px"><br></div><div style="color:rgb(32,33,36);font-family:docs-Roboto;font-size:14.6667px">5) The <b>Food Procurement Fellow</b> will work with <a href="https://dining.ucr.edu/ucr-dining-services-sustainability" target="_blank">Dining Services</a> procurement and operations staff to identify challenges and potential solutions related to increasing sustainable and plant-based food procurement and eliminating single use plastics. They will work on projects to align definitions and reporting of sustainable and plant-based food procurement; conduct data collection and analysis of current institutional food procurement; or identify the cost differences associated with switching to sustainable suppliers to meet the UC’s sustainable food procurement goal, and how it may impact menu planning.</div><div style="color:rgb(32,33,36);font-family:docs-Roboto;font-size:14.6667px"><br></div><div style="color:rgb(32,33,36);font-family:docs-Roboto;font-size:14.6667px">6) The <b>Sustainable Food and Agriculture Student Engagement Fellow</b> will support efforts to engage the UCR community on the environmental and health benefits of sustainable and plant-based foods. They will develop and disseminate educational materials to build community awareness of the environmental and health benefits of choosing sustainable and plant-based foods, and build awareness of the efforts and projects happening at UCR to reduce food waste and promote sustainable and plant-based foods. They will gather community input, suggestions, issues, and opportunities about UCR’s programs and approaches to promoting sustainable agriculture and food.</div><div style="color:rgb(32,33,36);font-family:docs-Roboto;font-size:14.6667px"><br></div><div style="color:rgb(32,33,36);font-family:docs-Roboto;font-size:14.6667px">Fellowships are open to all undergraduate and graduate students, regardless of immigration status. Students must be enrolled at UCR for the entire 2025-2026 academic year.</div><div style="color:rgb(32,33,36);font-family:docs-Roboto;font-size:14.6667px"><br></div><div style="color:rgb(32,33,36);font-family:docs-Roboto;font-size:14.6667px">Fellows will be connected to a mentor in a UCR unit relevant to their project (UCR Office of Sustainability, Basic Needs Department, Dining Services, Human Resources or the R'Garden). Fellows are advised to work with their mentor to develop a work plan that includes their project goals, deliverables, timelines, and the metrics for measuring success. Fellows should meet regularly with their project mentor to discuss projects, progress and issues.</div><br style="color:rgb(32,33,36);font-family:docs-Roboto;font-size:14.6667px"><div style="color:rgb(32,33,36);font-family:docs-Roboto;font-size:14.6667px">Student fellows are requested to attend the following systemwide events:<br>● A virtual orientation in mid-September 2025.<br>● A leadership training in November 2025.<br>● Quarterly Fellows meetings and topical trainings hosted throughout the year.<br>● A virtual closing symposium and poster presentation in May 2026.<br>● Additional activities such as conference calls, Global Climate Leadership Council meetings and trainings or cohort building activities.</div><div style="color:rgb(32,33,36);font-family:docs-Roboto;font-size:14.6667px"><br></div><div style="color:rgb(32,33,36);font-family:docs-Roboto;font-size:14.6667px">Fellows will be asked to submit progress reports and a final evaluation, including the metrics used to evaluate their project’s impact. Fellows will develop an end-of-year poster outlining their projects. Additionally, fellows will be encouraged to share and submit any tools, training, data sets and other deliverables developed in the process of their fellowship.<br><br>The UCR Leading on Climate fellowships are administered by the Department of Society, Environment and Health Equity (SEHE).
