Dear colleagues,

Friendly reminder: I’m conducting a “Research and Writing Syllabus”
workshop for faculty, including postdoc fellows, from *10am - 10:30am
(Pacific) tomorrow Thursday 6/26 *via Zoom. There’s no need to register.
Nothing to prep. Just show up:

Zoom meeting ID: 926 7105 8701
Passcode: 182546

What Is a research & writing syllabus? Have you ever written a syllabus?
The answer is yes. But have you ever written a syllabus for your own
research and writing? Drawing on the smarts of writing coaches like Michelle
Boyd <https://www.inkwellretreats.org/who.html> and Kerry Anne Rockquemore
<https://www.ncfdd.org/company/team/>, I came up with the concept of a
research & writing syllabus because I needed an effective way to make
decisions and judgment calls about what my research and writing values,
priorities, objectives, and tasks are. These become very clear when I map
them onto a week-by-week schedule, just like I do when I create a syllabus
for my courses. Unlike a to-do list, a syllabus consists of a series of
thoughtful decisions. For example, if one approaches one’s research like
it’s a to-do list, the typical mindset presumes that one is a machine: I’m
going to do everything. By contrast, when one creates a syllabus, the
mindset is, I’m going to do the assigned research task. So toward the end
of every quarter I create a research and writing syllabus for myself for
the next quarter.

Questions? Drop me an email: sarita.see at ucr.edu.

My best,
Sarita

I’m so sorry if it conflicts with your schedule. Feel free to email me
off-list and I’d be happy to send you a sample syllabus. If you’ve taken
any workshops with Kerry Ann Rockquemore
<https://www.rienner.com/title/The_Black_Academic_s_Guide_to_Winning_Tenure_Without_Losing_Your_Soul>,
it’ll look uncannily like her strategic plan (which it is!). But my take is
to frame it as a syllabus or a lesson plan.

Any questions? Drop me an email.

My best,
Sarita
