Dear SEHE affiliates,
It was so good to see many of you yesterday at the Latinxs & Environment
seminar and the social hour yesterday. I can't tell you how meaningful it
was to think through climate anxiety with Jade Sasser, then share snacks
and conversation around a table, on the other side of a terrible week.
I want to highlight a great interview with SEHE affiliate Francesca Hopkins
<https://news.ucr.edu/articles/2025/01/15/climate-scientists-take-la-fires?utm_source=UC+Riverside+Master+List&utm_campaign=5f4a74d731-newsletter-ucr-life-011625&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-5f4a74d731-87554813>
about the dynamic interplay between rising temperatures, humidity levels in
the air, vegetation growth and fire. Here's my takeaway: the
Clausius-Clapeyron relation is a thing, and it's exponential, not linear.
And - this we all know here - "we need to think differently." Thank you,
Francesca.
In case you have not seen this through other channels: there is now a
website for info about UC support for wildfire-impacted faculty, staff and
students:

.
UCR Leading on Climate Fellow Danielle Ma is organizing a Wildfire Relief
Drive with the UCR Basic Needs Department. Here's the information from
Danielle to share with your colleagues and students (flyers attached):
"Currently, I am organizing a Wildfire Relief Drive project with my
fellowship and the Basic Needs Center. The goal of this project is to
collect donations from today until next Friday (1/24), and redistribute
them on 1/29 and 1/31 for students affected by the LA fires. We are also
asking for volunteers who would be able to help out on packaging and
distribution days (more information in the volunteer form).
I'm writing to ask if you would be open to sharing these flyers and/or
the Instagram
post <https://www.instagram.com/p/DE276_iSVpn/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==> to
your classes or anyone else who would be able to promote this drive. Please
let me know if you'd be interested in promoting. I've attached the flyers
below for your reference, and the post is linked above. If you know anyone
else who'd be willing to help spread the word, please send their emails to
me or send the flyers directly to them."
I'll also attach the flyer for the SEHE Open House on 1/29, just as a
reminder to share if you are willing.
Take good care, everyone!
Dana
