>From future SEHE faculty member Cristina Gomez Vidal, an opportunity for
graduate students. Thanks as well to affiliate Mark Wolfson for forwarding
the announcement as well.
I wanted to share with you and others in the department who may work with
PhD students about this year's final recruitment for the Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation's Health Policy Research Scholars (HPRS)
<https://healthpolicyresearch-scholars.org/>program. The program provides
four years of financial, leadership, and mentoring support for doctoral
students across disciplines. Beyond that, the network one builds yields an
extensive, supportive, excellent network of scholars nationwide. If you
know of any PhD students interested in applying, there are webinars, and I
am more than happy to speak to anyone about the program and share my
materials as well.
Best regards,
Cristina

But don’t get hung up on our name, because we’re not just looking for
students who do health policy research. We’re looking for doctoral students
whose research has the potential to impact health and well-being: The
economics student examining how the marketplace drives decisions that
create barriers to good health.

My name is Jon and I’m a PhD student in urban planning at University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and scholar with Health Policy Research
Scholars (HPRS).
Before I began my doctoral program, I actively collaborated as an urban
planner and policy analyst with healthcare anchor institutions to foster
healthier social environments for marginalized communities. During this
time, I encountered challenges stemming from limited data on these
institutions' investments in sustainable resources. These analytical
hurdles inspired me to pursue an academic career dedicated to bridging
datasets and generating insights that empower healthcare institutions to
effectively address the social health needs of underserved populations. My
research focuses on analyzing the social determinants of health and the
financial implications of public health policy. I investigate strategies to
enhance the supply and impact of resources that healthcare institutions
invest in communities in need, promoting sustainable development.
As an African American male doctoral student in urban planning, joining
HPRS has been a truly transformative experience. When I began my
professional career, I had a limited understanding of policy and my
potential role within it. Now, HPRS has connected me with invaluable
training, mentors, and funding opportunities that have broadened my
perspective. One of the most rewarding aspects has been the opportunity to
engage with a national network of fellow doctoral students and leaders from
diverse disciplines who prioritize equity in their research.
Through HPRS, I am currently refining my skills in crafting research
questions that not only address community needs but also resonate in policy
discussions. By utilizing participatory and systems thinking approaches, I
strive to promote more equitable health outcomes. I understand that
advancing health equity requires collective effort—which is why I deeply
value the interdisciplinary collaboration within HPRS, where diverse
leaders and scholars unite to tackle interconnected barriers. This program
supports my journey with essential resources and a strong sense of
community and belonging—with a shared vision of a future where health is
for everyone.
