The Road Less Traveled: Exploring Non-Academic careers in Higher Education
This presentation aims to provide graduate students in political science
with actionable insights into exploring non-academic career paths within
higher education. Drawing on the transferable skills developed through a
political science PhD, the session will address key strategies for
navigating this transition, including collaborating with faculty advisors,
networking effectively while completing your degree, and identifying
pathways aligned with individual interests. Additionally, we will explore
proactive approaches to securing opportunities that lay the groundwork for
post-graduation success. I will speak to my own experience that led me to
the Divisional Financial Administrative Officer role after completing a PhD
in political science. A special focus will be given to overcoming
challenges such as balancing engagement with the discipline while pursuing
a non-academic career. Attendees will leave with practical tools and a
clearer roadmap for achieving their professional goals beyond the
traditional academic track.
Cheering!
Dana
