Dear SEHE affiliates,
This week's Latinxs & the Environment seminar will feature *Alondra
Mateo, Community Organizer & Programs Coordinator at the People's
Collective For Environmental Justice (PC4EJ)*.
Mateo was raised in Orange County and moved to the Inland Empire in 2017 to
attend UCR, where she received a B.S. in Mathematics. Throughout her time
at UCR, she advocated for women in STEM, as less than 20% of the
engineering college identified as women. This included creating inclusive
spaces to meet and share common experiences, hosting workshops with
professors, and co-organizing professional events that centered womxn. She
also advocated for undocumented students and co-founded an organization
that aimed to create opportunities and provide guidance for immigrant
youth. Alondra now lives in Chino Hills and through her previous work as a
promotora for PCEJ, she has learned more about community efforts and is
passionate about working together to create a healthier and safer community
in her role now as an organizer. At the Latinxs & the Environment seminar,
Mateo will discuss ongoing court cases regarding air pollution and
warehousing in the Inland Empire.
The seminar meets on *Wednesday 10/16 (and every Wednesday) from 4-5:30pm
in INTN 3023*.
Please share with your students if you think it's appropriate; we'd love to
see you there.
Best,
Dana
