Dear SEHE friends,
Please see this important call below. This kind of action is central to
what I understand to be SEHE's mission and identity. We are asked to
forward to our networks, especially to California-based Tribes and
indigenous-led organizations. The deadline for responses is February 23.
Thank you.
Dana

Ayukîi (Hello) all, Please distribute through your networks with a special
focus on trying to get California based tribes and indigenous led
organizations and their ally organizations. Sorry for the tight deadline
on this, it has taken a while to stand ISN up and make the transition into
such operational space.
I write to share with you a sign-on letter from the Indigenous Stewardship
Network (ISN) to the University of California Agriculture and Natural
Resources' (UC ANR) 15-year Strategic Planning process. Given that the
University of California and their endowments were founded off of the sale
of stolen Indigenous lands, the letter strongly urges the University of
California to allocate 1% of their $28 Billion endowment each year over the
next 15 years to support Tribal workforce development and Indigenous
stewardship.
This $280 million per year could result in the equivalent of roughly 126
endowed positions at Tribes and Tribally-led organizations per year, though
each Tribe and Tribally-led organization could use allocated funds to
support its own Indigenous stewardship priorities, which may include
endowed positions, purchasing land, supporting careers in Indigenous
stewardship, restoring traditional landscapes, protecting cultural and
sacred places, and more.
If this effort is successful, ISN plans to work with the First Nations
Development Institute (FNDI) or other willing foundations to develop an
equitable process for reviewing proposals and the allocation and
distribution of funds to Tribes and Indigenous organizations so that we can
sustainably build up and support Indigenous stewardship workforces within
our Indigenous communities, and provide pathways for Tribal students to
return to their homelands. This will be paramount for the revitalization of
our Indigenous knowledge, practice, and belief systems throughout the state
of California.
If your organization is interested in signing on, please share your Tribe
or organization's name and logo with ISN Network Director, Tasha-Norton
James at tashadjn at hotmail.com by February 23, 2024, to ensure that she can
include them all in one letter prior to the UC ANR public comment deadline.
Individuals and organizations can also add your name, affiliation, and
contact information here:
https://airtable.com/apprgzcZFt9xeenXr/pagxItEtgwXQhM87i/form
This has potential to roll out nationally to additional land grant
universities and beyond. We may bring First Nations Development institute
on board for managing fund distribution with potential for a regional
proposal review body and technical assistance in setting up investment
structures for those awarded long term funds.
Yôotva!
