Dear SEHE affiliates,
I'm thrilled to announce the UCR Bonnie Reiss Leading on Climate Fellows
for 2024-2025:
*Victoria Podakova (Political Science major), Climate Action Student
Engagement fellow*, will work with the Office of Sustainability to support
efforts to engage students in support of UCR's climate action goals.
Victoria will develop and disseminate educational materials to build
community awareness and generate support for climate action-related
projects. Victoria also will play an important role in communicating
student opinions on UC’s climate policy, programs, and actions to
university leadership.
*Christine Seaman (Masters in Public Policy), Planning (Resilience/Climate
Action Policy) Fellow*, will work with the Office of Sustainability on a
project related to UCR's Climate Action Plan to achieve campus targets for
reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions, as well as campus plans for adaptation,
resilience, equity, and climate justice. Christine has a background in
disaster resilience and will apply those skills to climate resilience
planning.
*Aashish Raheja (MS in Computer Science), Decarbonization Fellow*, will
work with the Office of Sustainability on a project that supports the
development and implementation of the UCR decarbonization study. Aashish
experienced the catastrophic impacts of climate change with major flooding
in Mumbai and will apply his engineering/ CS skills to reducing those
impacts.
*Rahul Almeida (Biology major), Sustainable Food and Agriculture Student
Engagement Fellow*, will support efforts to engage the UCR community on the
environmental and health benefits of sustainable and plant-based foods.
Rahul will develop and disseminate educational materials - specifically, a
student community cookbook - to build community awareness of the
environmental and health benefits of choosing sustainable and plant-based
foods, and build awareness of the efforts and projects happening at UCR to
reduce food waste and promote sustainable and plant-based foods. Rahul will
gather community input, suggestions, issues, and opportunities about UCR’s
programs and approaches to promoting sustainable agriculture and food.
*Danielle Ma (Political Science major), Sustainable Food and Agriculture
Fellow,* will work with the Basic Needs department and Dining Services
to expand and maintain the UCR Food Recovery Network chapter, and to reduce
food waste on campus.
*Shrey Patel (MBA), Sustainable Food and Agriculture Fellow,* will apply
his business accounting skills in work with DIning Services to identify
challenges and potential solutions related to increasing sustainable and
plant-based food procurement and eliminating single use plastics.
It's great to see fellows hailing from almost all the schools and colleges,
both graduates and undergraduates. There were many other extraordinary
applicants and the choice was very difficult. Enormous thanks to Jade,
Cassia, Ellen, Francis Mitalo (Office of Sustainability), Cynthia Gonzalez
(Basic Needs) and Gustavo Plascencia (Dining Services) for investing
considerable time and energy into selecting and interviewing the
candidates.
Yay!
I hope that all of you are doing well. I promise an update on SEHE soon, as
we prepare to launch our two new majors and 25 new classes. Mark the
afternoon of September 18 on your calendars for a little something.
Happy August,
Dana
