Dear SEHE affiliates,
Please join Farah Godrej and I on *November 1, 10:30am-12pm*, for a virtual
research discussion on the topic of Hunger, Meditation, Incarceration
<https://events.ucr.edu/event/hunger_meditation_incarceration>.
You can *register here*
<https://ucr.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJwvdeyrrzksHdIpRXmmH7jzdCgmuOI7UoGk#/registration>
.
This event is organized by the Health Humanities & Disability Justice
Initiative, thanks to SEHE affiliates Carla Mazzio, Fuson Wang and Matthew
King.
This is also the kickoff event for a planned series of research
conversations between SEHE faculty affiliates. In our affiliate survey, a
large majority of you asked us to create space to share research with each
other and create community/ collaboration. Over the course of the year, we
plan to stage conversations like this one between two SEHE affiliates. We
will have short research presentations followed by a dual conversation
between two SEHE faculty members. (If you offered to share your research, I
will be contacting you in the near future to schedule.)
I hope that you can join us and help to begin to build our shared research
community!
Wishing you all the best as we enter our second month of Fall,
Dana
Event description: A conversation about carceral ‘nutrition’ and carceral
‘wellness’, in which terms meant to denote sustenance, nourishment and
health are repurposed by the mass incarceration complex as forms of
punishment and behavior control. This conversation will consider the
possibilities of building anti-carceral movements through practices of
nourishment (such as mutual aid and hunger striking) and liberatory forms
of yoga and meditation. It will also consider questions, concerns, and
worries about how to confront carcerality as scholars and as responsible
humans.
