Graduation Day



June at UCR is traditionally associated with commencement, so it’s fitting that I will be “graduating” out of my role of Staff Assembly President at the end of this month.

In many ways, it’s been one of the most challenging and unique periods of my life and probably yours, too. Reemerging from a once-in-a-century pandemic, there have been so many questions we’ve never had to consider:

How — and when — do we safely re-socialize in person after more than 2 years of trying every conceivable way to maintain our social distance? How do we re-envision the future of work and support remote/hybrid so it remains embraced and successful? How do we make our UCR staff feel closer to whole after two years of COVID loss in areas that include professional development, basic needs, retention, compensation, and promotion, psychological safety, mental health, social justice, and work/life balance?

Our Staff Assembly Executive Board has spent the last 12 months working across campus with so many supportive and engaged partners to put answers to those difficult questions, whether it’s advocating for more staff funding both at UCR<https://insideucr.ucr.edu/announcements/2021/07/13/use-federal-higher-education-emergency-relief-funds-heerf-ucr> and in Sacramento<https://www.linkedin.com/posts/jeffgirod_ucrchass-ucr-ucrstaffassembly-activity-6935011002539290624-1JPg?utm_source=linkedin_share&utm_medium=member_desktop_web>, parsing and presenting the results from last year’s Staff Engagement Survey<https://drive.google.com/file/d/126_lESUjyHqCxgNxsXvIr-Z-bNUykvVN/view>, establishing one of the only staff pantries<https://insideucr.ucr.edu/stories/2022/03/21/food-program-staff-members-sees-demand> in the UC system, redefining the performance appraisal process in partnership with HR, giving away more than 160 professional head shots and downloadable resumes as part of our two-day UCR Staff Conference,<https://insideucr.ucr.edu/stories/2022/03/08/staff-conference-promotes-building-success> holding the first in-person General Meeting since 2019<https://www.facebook.com/ucrsa/posts/pfbid02eN7tuDmk7EJsu1eEstrjKxdXRf8RsYB951uuN9kbNkgn4jqsWJpYHBUcFMfKRUYGl>, or just getting together for a little Build-a-Bear and goat yoga<https://insideucr.ucr.edu/stories/2022/05/03/campus-celebrates-staff-appreciation-goat-yoga>.

It has truly been a team effort by so many dedicated people during extraordinary times.

Even though I’m “graduating,” more than 80 percent of this year’s talented Executive Board has signed up for another year. It’s a testament to both their dedication, and the idea that service on behalf of others is not bound by some arbitrary calendar date. I look forward to continuing to support my dear friends on the Board, including Agam Patel and Erika Leon in their new roles as President and Vice President/President-Elect.

For now, I’ll just say thank you and see you around. The work continues…
