Letter from Dennis McIver, Staff Assembly President

For many, Spring represents renewal and a chance to start fresh. With each home cleaned from top to bottom and each seed sown, we invest in this moment with hope of tomorrow's promise both in and out of our lives.

As an Executive Board, we are very excited to provide you with a number of opportunities for investment in yourself that will help you reap future benefits in this year and beyond:

Tomorrow at noon, the Office of Undergraduate Education will offer an important talk on high performance during a pandemic. We are grateful for Dean Jennifer Brown and Joey Mavity for their willingness to make this available to staff members and look forward to learning from it.

March 23rd and 24th will mark the first UCR Staff Conference which will offer many opportunities for learning. I am very grateful for the group that worked closely to make this happen, which includes our friends at LEAD and HR Employee and Organizational Development.

March 26th will mark the conclusion of recruitment for the inaugural cohort of the Highlander Mentor Connection. As a joint operation between Staff Assembly, LEAD, AMP and HR EOD, the initiative will provide growth and developmental opportunities for mentors and mentees alike.

As we move through this month, please remember to also take time to simply smell the roses and join us for fun activities as well which includes trivia, virtual bingo and two Pictionary sessions.

We hope that this, and the remaining events of this year, will help you continue to flourish and bloom in these uncertain times. Please don't hesitate to reach out if there are other things we can provide to help.

FEBRUARY RECAPS

Staff Assembly Candygrams

In February, Staff Assembly held their first candygram sale for staff members wishing to send good wishes to friends, family and loved ones as a show of appreciation. What started as Junior high school nostalgia, turned into the opportunity for people to showcase their kindness and send someone something sweet. More than five dozen orders were made!

Don't worry, if you missed the February sell, candygrams will be back during the spring quarter.

Highlander Mentor Connection

Co-sponsored by UC Riverside's Human Resources<https://hr.ucr.edu/employee-and-organizational-development>, Staff Assembly<https://staffassembly.ucr.edu/> LEAD<https://lead.ucr.edu/> and AMP<https://amp.ucr.edu/>, the Highlander Mentor Connection (HMC)<https://hr.ucr.edu/highlander-mentor-connection> provides UCR staff with professional development through peer-to-peer mentorship.

This is a 10-week program open to all UCR staff, serving in the role of either a mentor or mentee. Once applications are received, the HMC executive committee will pair mentor-mentee pairs based on several criteria including professional experience, shared interests and goals.

We ask that all mentor-mentee pairs meet a minimum of once every two weeks. Suggested topics to discuss include getting to know each other, sharing educational and professional experience, goal-setting, potential areas for development, resume review, mock job interviews, and networking opportunities.

The program will also feature an initial orientation in where you will meet your partner and can ask questions, and a post-program celebration where you can meet with other graduates of the program.

Post-COVID Town Hall with VC Gerry Bomotti

Friday, March 19 | 10:00 am

Virtual Meeting

Gerry Bomotti, Vice Chancellor for Planning, Budget & Administration and Human Resources in collaboration with Staff Assembly, are hosting a webinar town hall on Friday, March 19th from 10:00am - 11:00am. The purpose of the town hall will be to solicit feedback, input and suggestions from the campus as we begin to think about the options for remote work for staff post COVID.

There have been many questions coming from across campus about what the post-COVID "normal" might be relative to remote work. A possible silver lining of the COVID experience is that many staff can work very effectively remotely, although some must come to campus to perform their duties and responsibilities. UCR is initiating a process to engage campus in a discussion about post-COVID remote work and this town hall is a kick off to that process. We mostly want to highlight that we are going to work on this important issue and we would use this town hall to gather feedback and input from campus. We also want to address questions that we can at this point although there is much work to be done through this process before we have any final recommendations, and we expect guidance coming from UCOP as well.

The session will also feature Dennis McIver, Staff Assembly President and Jeff Girod, Staff Assembly Vice President/President-Elect. This session will be recorded for future viewing as well.
