Letter from Jeff Girod, Staff Assembly President

In my role as Staff Assembly president, I'm privileged to serve as the staff representative on UC Riverside’s Campus Finance Committee<https://provost.ucr.edu/campus-finance-committee>, chaired by Provost Elizabeth Watkins, with input from college deans, vice chancellors, the Academic Senate chair, and other members of campus leadership.

Over the last two months, the committee met frequently to finalize a plan to allocate millions of dollars in one-time Federal Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds (HEERF) intended to help offset some of the loss directly related to COVID-19. The final recommendations<https://insideucr.ucr.edu/announcements/2021/07/13/use-federal-higher-education-emergency-relief-funds-heerf-ucr> include more than $1.7 million for UCR staff that include work-from-home equipment, expanded mental health services, additional professional development opportunities, and expanded staff access to the R’Pantry — making it only the third emergency staff pantry in the UC system.

Staff Assembly will continue to work closely with campus stakeholders to ensure this important funding is utilized in the best interest of UCR staff. We will also share additional information about when and how to access these resources, as programs and services are clarified and implemented.

There is still much left to do, but it's also important to celebrate the victories.
