Hello friends,

In November, two members of the UCR Staff Assembly Executive Board spoke before the UC Board of Regents, informing members of UCR's current financial challenges. We continued advocating for UCR during the most recent Regents meeting, which concluded on January 20 and included 18 Regents and Chancellors from all 10 UC campuses.

In addition to my comments, Vice President/President-Elect Jeff Girod and Immediate Past President Crystal Petrini spoke before the Board of Regents during the public comment portion to update members about proposed campus cuts and restate the importance of rebenching.

Rebenching is defined by the University of California<https://accountability.universityofcalifornia.edu/2017/chapters/chapter-12.html> as a process that "distributes state funds on an equal per-weighted-student basis across the campuses and ensures that students are supported equally by the state regardless of campus."

Links to each public comment are below:

Comments from our Executive Board members as well as words from Chancellor Kim Wilcox have had an impact. Rebenching was a central piece of the Finance and Capital Strategies Committee<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkuL7Iyz3SY> meeting on Jan. 20, and the Regents have committed to creating a workgroup to investigate rebenching.

UCR's financial situation is no individual person's fault, but there should be a shared responsibility throughout the University of California to fix it now.

Staff Assembly is honored to advocate for our campus and will continue to do so at the next Regents meeting in March and beyond.

Sincerely,

Dennis McIver,
President, UCR Staff Assembly
