[Sa-staff] Staff Assembly: Advocating For UCR

Greetings everyone,

I want to provide a quick update about the UC Regents Meeting that took place on Nov. 18-19. As you may already know, the UC Board of Regents consists of 26 members who meet six times per year, every other month, to make several important decisions about how UC's 10 campuses are governed including budgeting and policy.

During the most recent two-day meeting in November, both myself and Immediate Past President Crystal Petrini had the opportunity to speak on behalf of UCR and its staff. While our comments were limited to one minute each, it appears at least one UC Regent heard them. During a later session, the Board of Regents invited Chancellor Wilcox to speak about the budget impacts to UCR<https://youtu.be/osUsiNYTnX4?t=9886>. So why does this matter? I would say for two important reasons:


1.      UCR Staff Assembly is one of the only UC Staff Assembly groups who spoke about our funding before the Regents.

2.      It highlights the fact that we are partners with UCR senior leadership in trying to right what I would describe as a historic wrong. To this point, we are engaging other campus partners about future advocacy and what next steps should look like.

Staff Assembly is the preeminent organization for celebrating and uplifting UCR staff, but the work Staff Assembly has done since June shows we can also be strong advocates for everyone - staff, faculty, students - at UCR.

I will keep you posted on other places we can continue work in advocacy, but for now I wanted to share this along with my continued gratitude for each of you.
