Dr. Dena Plemmons, Associate Professor with Graduate Division at UCR and
the Director of the Research Ethics & Education Program, would like to hold
a professional development course for Postdocs. It would be intended to
pilot "Labs that Work," a program designed to "cover ethical laboratory and
scientific practices, improving cultural competence, and helping
researchers to work together effectively, including dealing with conflicts,
difficult decisions, and interpersonal problems" (
https://labsthatwork.web.illinois.edu/).

Postdocs participating in the course can expect to learn and discuss topics
including: responsible conduct of research; cultural competency and
inclusion; power, incivility, and harassment; and leadership development.

The proposed format is 4 sessions of 2 hours each across 4 weeks (8 hours
total time). The first part of the session would be a screening of part of
a movie that fictionalizes experiences of a researcher facing workplace
challenges like discrimination and bad mentorship. The second part of the
session would be a group discussion of the material guided by a workbook
with both group and take-home prompts.

The RPA thanks you for responding to this survey (by October 19th), which
is intended to gauge interest in this course, as well as to help with
scheduling to maximize participation.
