Dear RITL,

I'm pleased to inform you that we successfully decommissioned the UCR Collaborative cluster (UCRCC). It has been shut down, un-racked and disposed of.

This ITS hosted cluster was installed in 2008 and was used for HPC and other collaborative workflows. The hardware was inefficient, aging and unstable with many failures. This combined with little cluster support lead to near 0% utilization over the last few years. The decommission significantly reduces power/heat load in the SOME Datacenter. Reducing the power/heat load in the SOME Datacenter subsequently helps to stabilize the datacenter which has been a problem. This also helps with the efforts to prepare the SOME Datacenter for hopeful renovation.

Decommissioning UCRCC was a goal of mine because we want to champion the idea that the UCR High-Performance Computing Center (HPCC) is the main HPC resources on Campus. HPCC is an affordable, powerful and flexible HPC resource and is our first recommendation for HPC workflows.
