Subject: Invitation to Virtual event 26 January and more ways to talk to NASA Science on data/information sharing policies
Various FDP committees and members address the complexities and costs of data management and related open science issues. The data, software, and publications produced as part of NASA’s scientific research activities, regardless of funding vehicle, e.g., grant, contract, inter-or intra-agency agreements, represents a significant public investment. It is Science Mission Directorate’s (SMD) policy, consistent with NASA and Federal policy, that information produced from SMD-funded scientific research activities be made publicly available to the greatest practical extent. I touched briefly on a Science Policy Request for Information on this topic during the Federal Agency update this week and am pleased to share the following invitation released today. Please forward to others at your organizations who may be interested.

Subject: Pew Scholars Program 2023 cycle information
Dear University Partner,
You are receiving this email as a contact person for the Pew Biomedical Scholars grant program. As we did last year, we are making a temporary adjustment to our eligibility criteria to provide flexibility due to COVID-19-related research disruptions. Below please find adjusted eligibility criteria and key dates for conducting your internal submission competition and the nominee application process. For full eligibility criteria, please refer to our program website: https://www.pewtrusts.org/en/projects/pew-biomedical-scholars/program-details<https://click.pewtrusts.org/?qs=42c0e4d0e13c79296228dd472bf9c4661177722b68eb8e699ec8907b1ab8c00debe2756cce459371999aa0871c0dee660493bae1e5d2b065>.
Eligibility criteria adjustment
•
Historically, applicants must be in the first three years of their assistant professor position to apply.
* Due to COVID-19-related research disruptions, we are adding an additional year of eligibility so that individuals in the first four years of their assistant professor position are eligible to apply.
•
For the upcoming 2023 grant cycle, the application opens on June 13, 2022, and individuals must not have been appointed as an assistant professor at any institution prior to June 13, 2018, whether or not such an appointment was on a tenure track. Exceptions are outlined on our program website.
•
Eligibility adjustments will apply to three award cycles (2022, 2023, 2024).
Key dates
•
Early April: Institutional invitation distributed, and nomination solicited
•
Wednesday, May 18: Institutional nomination due
•
Monday, June 13: Pew Biomedical Scholars application portal opens
•
Thursday, September 8: Pew Biomedical Scholars application due
We will host office hours to answer questions this spring. If you or any of your faculty have questions about any part of the application process, please feel free to reach out to the Pew Biomedical Programs team at scholarsapp at pewtrusts.org<mailto:scholarsapp at pewtrusts.org>.
Sincerely,
Kara Coleman

Subject: NIST's Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program Announcement
Dear University/College Partners,
The U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)<https://www.nist.gov/> is seeking enthusiastic undergraduate students to apply to the agency’s premier Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program. The SURF Program will be administered virtually with program dates of May 23, 2022 to August 5, 2022. Note: Participants will not travel to the NIST laboratories to conduct research in the 2022 SURF Program. Therefore, the fellowship does not include support for travel or lodging.
Since 1993, SURF students from across the country have had the opportunity to gain valuable, hands-on experience, working with cutting edge technology in one of the world's leading research organizations and home to three Nobel Prize winners. The mission of the SURF Program is to inspire undergraduate students to pursue careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) through a unique research experience that supports the NIST mission.
Eligibility
•A United States (U.S.) citizen or U.S. permanent resident as of the application deadline
•Enrolled full-time at a U.S. accredited 2-year or 4-year college or university during the time of application
•Currently, classified as a college freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior
•Cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale. GPA is a participation requirement and will be verified at the time the appointment is accepted.
•Majoring in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) field with interest in measurement science, standards, and technology research.
•Plan to pursue a career or graduate degree in STEM.
Benefits
As a SURF participant, you can expect to train under the mentorship of international known NIST scientists and engineers, acquire lifelong leadership and analytical skills, build professional networks, and learn about a career in public service. Additionally, you will also gain insight on how NIST improves our quality of life through the advancement of measurement science, standards, and technology. During the 11-week appointment, participants will receive a stipend ( and access to numerous professional development opportunities.
We hope you consider applying to the 2022 Virtual SURF Program. Prospective applicants must apply for acceptance into the SURF Program on USAJobs.Gov<https://www.usajobs.gov/> (Search SURF Boulder<https://www.usajobs.gov/job/629220400> or SURF Gaithersburg<https://www.usajobs.gov/job/629220500>).
The announcement will close on February 15, 2022 at 11:59 PM (Eastern time) or when we have received the application limit which may be sooner than the closing date. Thus, applicants are strongly encouraged to submit the on-line application and supporting documents ahead of the announcement closing date.
