TITLE: Classifying movement categories from continuously-recording wearable
sensors

ABSTRACT:
How infants move in everyday life is critical for understanding healthy
development. However, existing video-based methods to record movements are
insufficient to measure the entirety of infants' daily experiences in home
life. In this talk, I will describe my lab's development of a wearable
sensor methodology to classify movement categories (position and restraint)
from inertial sensor data. I will present our validation of the method
against video-coded ground truth data and discuss which modeling choices
impact classification performance. Finally, I will discuss our current and
future applications of the method for studying infant development.

Bio

Dr. Franchak earned a BA in Cognitive Science from the University of
Virginia in 2005 and a PhD in Experimental Psychology from New York
University in 2011. Afterwards, he completed postdoctoral fellowships at
New York University (2011-2013) and Indiana University (2013-2014) before
joining UC Riverside in 2014. Dr. Franchak was named a Rising Star by the
Association for Psychological Science in 2015 and a Visiting Scholar by the
McPherson Eye Research Institute in 2020. In 2022, he was promoted to
Associate Professor. He is a member of the Developmental Area, Cognitive
and Cognitive Neuroscience Area, and Quantitative Specialized Subfield in
the UCR Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences. His current research
focuses on infant perceptual-motor development and is funded by grants from
the James S. McDonnell Foundation and National Science Foundation.

Sponsored by the RAISE at UCR Institute, the AI Seminar Series presents
speakers working on cutting edge Foundational AI or applying AI in their
research. The goal of these seminars is to inform the UCR community about
current trends in AI research and promote collaborations between faculty in
this emerging field. These seminars are open to interested faculty and
graduate/undergraduate students. Please forward this email to other
colleagues or students in your lab that may be interested. After the seminar a
discussion will follow for questions, open problems, ideas for possible
collaborations etc.
