Re: UPTE Strike on May 26, 2005 (How to Dock Employees)

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Labor Relations recently sent an e-mail to Supervisors about the scheduled
UPTE strike on May 26, 2005. Here's an excerpt from that memo:

"As you may know, the University and UPTE have been negotiating for a long
time to get a new contract. The parties are working hard to reach an
agreement. You may also be aware that UPTE is calling for a one-day strike
on May 26, 2005. As always, employees who do not already have prior
approval to be off work (e.g., vacation, comp time off, etc.) are expected
to notify their department prior to their scheduled starting time if they
are not planning to be at work. Failure to properly notify and receive
approval for an absence results in that absence being considered
unauthorized. If you call in on the day of the UPTE strike (May 26, 2005)
and request sick leave, we will require that you provide a doctor's note
upon your return to work. If a doctor's note is not provided, your absence
will not be approved and you will not be able to use sick leave or be paid
for the day. It is important for employees to understand that
unapproved/unauthorized absences may be grounds for disciplinary action".

The Payroll office is hereby providing you with the instructions how to dock
the pay for employees who participate in this strike activity. As you may
know, the TIME ROSTER will be closed on May 25, 2005, therefore, adjustments
will only be allowed through screen 'EDLR' (Late/Reduce Pay). Please follow
these instructions carefully if you're the Payroll Preparer for your
department.

Verify with the employee's supervisor that the employee's absence was
unexcused to avoid any errors. After verification, proceed to reduce the
employee's pay for pay cycle 'MO' and pay period ending date '053105' as
follows:

1. Percentage paid Employees: - Process a reduction in pay by using
screen EDLR. Retrieve the appropriate distribution number(s) and enter "RX"
as the transaction type. Enter 0.0455 (%) in the Regular TIME column
(0.0455% is equivalent to 8 hours in a month with maximum hours of 176).

2. Hourly Paid Employees: - Process a reduction in Pay by using screen
EDLR. Retrieve the appropriate distribution number(s) and enter "RX" as the
transaction type. Enter 8.00 (H) in the Regular TIME column.

NOTE: You have until 1:00pm on Thursday, May 26, 2005 to complete this
action. We are scheduled to compute payroll that evening. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Please contact the Payroll Office at x2-3307 if you have any questions

Thank you for your assistance.
