Dear Professor Pion Berlin and Professor Brookes,

I hope you’re well. I write to ask your help with identifying a
doctoral student to serve as a predoctoral fellow on a research
project that I’m developing.

Working with evolving teams of students at Georgetown, I have been
advancing a project called “SIGLA” (States and Institutions of
Governance in Latin America, www.sigladata.org). Hosted by
the Center for Latin American Studies, a unit of Georgetown’s School
of Foreign Service, SIGLA is a multilingual database that provides
information about political and legal institutions in Latin America.
Building on its predecessor, the Political Database of the Americas
(PDBA, http://pdba.georgetown.edu),
today SIGLA (beta) includes current information about 11
institutions in three countries in English. Ultimately, the database
will include historical and current information in three languages
on 51 institutions in 20 countries. SIGLA is supported by generous
funding from the National Science Foundation, and National Endowment
for the Humanities, and Georgetown University.

I'd like to hire a predoctoral fellow to work with the project for
20 hours/week between September 1, 2024 and August 31, 2025 (and
potentially for another year if all goes well). The position
represents a unique opportunity to gain a range of skills, publish,
and work with wonderful Georgetown undergrads and graduate students.

Applicants must be pursuing a Ph.D. in political science or a
closely related discipline, and prior to the start of the
appointment, must have passed all qualifying exams, advanced to the
level of Ph.D. candidacy, and made substantial progress toward
completion of a dissertation focused on politics, governance, or the
rule of law in Latin America. The salary is $40,000 for the year
plus some basic university benefits.

I would be grateful if you would share the materials linked below
(the first two are also attached to this email) with anyone whom you
think might be interested – or whom you think might know students
who might be interested:
Best wishes,
