As you know, we try to conduct these surveys periodically in order to gain a sense of the prevailing climate among graduate students, as well as other important matters. Because of the importance of protecting student confidentiality, we have elected not to share the written comments verbatim, but rather to summarize them. Since then, the DGS along with the Chair of the department, have spent many hours in conversation with both faculty and students in order to discuss what measures might best address the concerns raised. Like many other departments, our efforts at resolving these issues are of course ongoing. This latest survey demonstrated that while there has been some steady improvement, other issues are ongoing and require continued attention. </span></div><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-left: 36pt; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;" class=""><span style="font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;" class=""> </span></p><div style="line-height: 1.38; margin-left: 36pt; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;" class=""><span style="font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;" class="">·</span><span style="font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;" class=""> </span><span style="font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;" class="">Comments revealed that occasional disparaging and/or demeaning remarks about certain forms of research and academic pursuits, approaches and methods was still commonplace in some quarters. We recognize that faculty have some work to do here as well, and we encourage everyone to practice the principles of kindness, support and affirmation in seminars and other department-level conversations, rather than dismissing the import of others’ questions, concerns or approaches.</span></div><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;" class=""><span style="font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;" class=""> </span></p><div style="line-height: 1.38; margin-left: 36pt; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;" class=""><span style="font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;" class="">·</span><span style="font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;" class=""> </span><span style="font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;" class="">Written comments have also revealed that unhealthy power dynamics pertaining to race and gender, sexual orientation, (dis)ability and age continue to require our attention. Since 2020, we have been made aware of </span><span style="font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;" class="">reports of unequal treatment based on race, gender, religion, sexuality, ability or other ascriptive categories; reports of unhealthy power dynamics among students of different cohorts; culturally-insensitive remarks, or offensive commentary pertaining to race and/or gender; unwanted and/or non-consensual expressions of romantic or sexual interest; and even reports of remarks by faculty that served (perhaps unwittingly) to dismiss or downgrade students’ concerns about these matters. </span><span style="font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;" class="">While the written comments overall indicate that much has been done to ameliorate these issues, we remain concerned with reports in the survey that indicate that some such behaviors and attitudes continue to require our attention.</span></div><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;" class=""><span style="font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;" class=""> </span></p><div style="line-height: 1.38; margin-left: 36pt; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;" class=""><span style="font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;" class="">·</span><span style="font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;" class=""> </span><span style="font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;" class="">In particular, the written comments pointed to the existence of cliques and the use of social media to suppress dissent and alternative viewpoints by members of these cliques. Such cliques are ostensibly operating both within official campus/department forums and spaces (such as graduate seminars), and outside them (in venues such as social media), with students reporting that legitimate debate and disagreement are being suppressed and discouraged in these venues, through what some describe as bullying tactics. While it is difficult for the Department to control what happens in non-campus venues, and particularly online/social media, these claims are of great concern to us. We encourage all students to remember that the pursuit of knowledge and free inquiry depend crucially on an environment in which civil, open and vigorous debate can thrive, which often requires the expression of viewpoints that not everyone may agree with.</span></div><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;" class=""><span style="font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;" class=""> </span></p><div style="line-height: 1.38; margin-left: 36pt; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;" class=""><span style="font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;" class="">·</span><span style="font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;" class=""> </span><span style="font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;" class="">Finally, comments indicate concern with harassment and/or cruel treatment toward undergraduate students by graduate students serving as TAs, including expressions of unwanted romantic interest. The Department takes these reports very seriously, and we encourage everyone to consider the stark power differential between undergraduate students and graduate student TAs, as well as to consider the principles of civility and appropriate professional boundaries when engaging with undergraduate students.
