*Title* Interdisciplinary research on ancient human-environment
interaction: towards quantitative approaches
*Abstract *The Bronze Age of Northwest China (~2000-800 BCE) was a time of
climatic and environmental instability, new agricultural and material
technologies, and increasing contact across eastern Eurasia. A range of
archaeological data suggests there was increasing diversity in subsistence
strategies in the region at this time, which likely increased societal
resilience. This talk presents the work of Dr. Berger and her team in
bioarchaeology (the study of ancient human skeletons) including ancient
disease transmission, injury patterns, diet, lifestyle, and demography.
They have found that while subsistence diversification can enhance
resilience in social-ecological systems, it also comes with both costs and
benefits for human health. The talk will also discuss prospective future
multidisciplinary research, whose aim is to reconstruct a more complete
model of ancient complex human-environment system dynamics.
