Greetings everyone,

We are pleased to announce that *Eric Mackey (UCR alumnus, PhD in Political
Science)* will be joining us on *Friday, January 16, 2026, from 1:00–2:00
PM in INTS 1113* for a *teaching demonstration* titled:

*Teaching Political Theory to Undergraduates: Featuring Thomas Hobbes*

This session will model a core pedagogical goal in political theory:
guiding students through an iterative process of writing and revision that
moves beyond summary toward the development of critical, contestable
arguments. Using Hobbes’s defense of absolute monarchy, Eric will
demonstrate how structured philosophical texts can serve as accessible
entry points for teaching argumentation, internal critique, and thesis
development.

Because Eric is currently on the job market, this will be a formal *teaching
demo*—and I *strongly encourage* graduate students, especially those who
have never seen one before, to attend. These demonstrations are an
important part of academic hiring, and this is a great opportunity to see
what they look like in practice.

We hope to see you there. (Food will be provided!)
